Question:
UHC Choice Plus (exclusion of Surgical and non-surgical treatment of obesity)

I was wondering if anyone else has this exclusion on their health insurance policy? It seems kind of vague to me in a few different ways. Has anyone had the surgery for other reasons than Weight Loss such as for sleep apnea, high blood pressure or other reasons? Can you employer ask that this exclusion be waived? Any help would be appreciated.    — Dean66 (posted on April 13, 2011)

I have UHC Choice Plus through the state of Ohio. The weight loss surgery exclusion was a choice made by your employer, not UHC. Every insurance company has a set of plans that the employers choose. Mine covered my surgery because the state considered a valid situation.

The person above is correct. That decision was made by your employer. My surgery was covered because I had two comorbidities - diabetes and high blood pressure. After surgery my diabetes was gone (4.9 HA1C test) and my blood pressure was 112/78. It was worth the investment. UHC probably administrates your emloyer's policy. It would probably be best to contact them about the comorbidities issue.
