Question:
What do you do when something is stuck and it hurts to eat?

I ate a cracker this morning that was dry and it must have gotten stuck. It hurts to eat anything else, how can I get it to move down and relieve some of the pain I am having?    — jennyboom (posted on May 6, 2008)

Drink some warm tea...that should help. Or some water. You need something wet to soften up the cracker.

The cracker should dissolve and move through soon, but to help it along, I would try some hot tea....or even just warm water. That's what usually worked for me. Sometimes I'd even have to make myself gag just to loosen things up. Use that as a last resort though. Good luck. I still get things stuck...and I'm almost at 7 months out! Just go slow....chew chew chew....and hopefully you won't have to deal with it too often. Hugs...Cheryl

Your lcuky it was a cracker. If it is pasta or meat or something heavy its stuvk until iut decides to move. If you drink it sits on top of it and that is stuck now too.

I have 10 words that should help tremendously CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW (DON'T STOP TILL THE FOOD IS PURE LIQUID. Good luck. I have not had my surgery yet and I KNOW this chewing will be a problem for me. I am use to eating fast and gulping is not going to help me in this situation. Lyn

This is SO probably not the answer docs are looking for, but my cousin has bypass many years ago, and when she gets "stuck" she sips diet pepsi. She said it sort of works like draino and gets the food to move and go down. That is pretty much the ONLY time she drinks carbonated drinks.

I still get food stuck and it FEELS like it hasn't gone down but really it is just the sore muscle or even tender part that you hurt while swallowing your food to whole.

Papaya enzyme can help break down food, but with a cracker, just some more liquid should help.

It may not just be a stuck cracker. Have you noticed that you are able to eat less amounts and less variety of foods? If so, make sure to check in with your bariatric doc. It may be a stricture. Crackers are easily dissolved, so a small sip of water should get things going... if that's truly the issue.

If you can drink / swallow saliva ok, then its most likely you've got some swelling or tenderness from the cracker stretching/rubbing your esophagus... warm fluids should help, you can also make "magic mouthwash" -- liquid benadryl and mylanta or maalox--the benadryl numbs things and the mylanta/maalox coats/soothes. Just make sure that you aren't exceeding the max dose on either. If you are more than "sore", can't swallow, can't get liquids or saliva down, then you need to call your doc (would not hurt calling your doc either way!!).

I had a pill get stuck and threw up everything for a day. I called the dr's office and they told me to get a diet coke or any diet carbonated drink and sip on it. You will throw it up too but it moves it on through or forces it up with it. It worked I only drank about 2 ozs and I was fine. It has never happened again.
