Question:
Pain under right rib cage w/ eating

I am having pain sometimes when I eat but it's not in my pouch area. The pain is located right below my right rib cage area and does NOT radiate to the back. I thought it might be dumping but when I saw my Doc he said that since I'm being anal about the sugar free thing that it's probably not that. Any ideas?? I still have a gall bladder but I've never had any issues with it before and it's not steady, it's only w/ certain foods. I am 18 days out and this is the ONLY pain I'm having. Thank God!    — Stacie S. (posted on April 27, 2007)

I too had pains but not 18 days out...turns out it was gastritis and I was put on prevacid....I think it could be too early to have it but you never know. Your pouch is healing and very sensitive. Pay close attention to what you are eating. Give your doctor a food log. I get the gastritis pain in different places but usually between the ribs at the bottom of the pouch.

First of all, get a new doctor! ANY doctor that says stupid statements like "since your being anal about the sugar free thing...." There is NO call for that, and that is NOT professional! Second, yes, I agree with the previous poster, it's probably gastritis, BUT find a new doc that supports your wls and is not against it! Good luck!

Regarding your pain, I have gallstones, and the pain usually begins in the back area, then travels to the area you described. It usually happens at night time. You should have your doctor prescribe an ultrasound for you. That will at least either be "yeah" or "nay" on the gallstone issue. Good Luck, I have had my gallstones for 18 years, and hopefully they will be removed when I have the surgery (hopefully late summer time) They can be as painfull as "labor" when I am having a full blow attack (I've only had 3 full blown attacks.) Not fun! Tamera

Please have another doctor check you out. I had a similar pain and it turned out to be ulcers. The ulcers eventually ate through my seperated stomach and into my pouch - reconnecting the two.
