Question:
Pain left side

I had RYN July 16, down 96 pounds and very thankful. Question is I am having pain not all the time, sharp pings, then constant. The spot of pain has gotten bigger about the size of my fist. 2 inches L side of belly button is where it started now out more. at times when I sit others when I lay, when I walk, last minutes other times 20 minutes then goes away if I lay or sit still it goes away then acts up again not always by moving just sitting also. Like now just sitting here it feels like a warm sensaton leading up to pain its a grabbing sinsation. Where skin feels like it is hurting at its worst time. I was wondering if anyone else has had this? I do have my incesion on that side from my surgery but it is quite aways from the spot that is hurting, and I have had a hernia in 1998 above my belibutton 4 inch scar from that is not bothering me. Was thinking this could be a hernia and if so how serious are they? My last one was from lifting a box from high shelf and it happened with a blink of an eye and the pain was serious. Has anyone had this feeling just curious am going to doc next week then RYN doc in Jan. he is 3 hours away. I know you guys are not physcians just wanted something to ease my mind. Bless and thankyou in advanced. Tammi    — Tammi Sandoval (posted on November 29, 2008)

Tammi, First congrats on the 96 pound weight loss. Could be a hernia but not likely. I would go to my doctor in the local ER if this pain continues. Hernias are basically tears or pulling apart. And the warm sensation you experience could be fluid leaking. I am a retired nurse so do get yourself check before you see the doc if you can. vinnigirl

I think you may have an incisional hernis....... Get it checked out with the doctor.

Hi Tammi, I have this pain also. I had my revision to a ERNY done July 2, 2008. I have a incisional hernia but from a different scar. I am trying to hold off of a hernia repair till I have a lower body lift. Congrads on your big weight loss. I am down 90 lbs myself. Please don't lift anything more than 5 lbs because you can get hernia;s much easier. It seems that I always have to have emergency surgery due to the hernia's getting stragulated in my bowel and than I have to have a bowel resection due to almost dead bowel. Good luck with your doctor's appt. Dawn

Hi Tammi, Cong on your big loss. I remember when I has those pains, and was told that was when the doctor works on my left side, and that was why I was in pain. But just to be safe, by all means, have it checks out. Good luck on your new venture. ~Carol~

Congratulations on your weight loss. I'm down a hundred and thirty one pounds from my heaviest, and eighty-five pounds since my RNY on July 2nd. Actually Tammi, some of us do have a medical background and some are even retired surgeons and doctors. You definitely could have a hernia and should have your doctor check it out. It's also not uncommon to have an adhesion, where the tissue from the surgery attaches to the abdominal wall or other parts of the tissue. This would give the symptoms you describe as well. Please do have this checked out as it can cause tearing or perforation of the intestines. My wife has Crohn's disease and they caused her to have to undergo a sixteen hour bowel re sectioning about four years ago.
