Question:
Does anyone have aching bones?

I haven't always been faithful taking my calcium citrate, now I have aching bones, does anyopne have this problem or could it be something else? Had RNY on 3/31/2009.    — regina6913 (posted on March 12, 2010)

I would go to your Dr, he may order a bone density test for you. I am going to get one, being I am older and had the RNY I worry about the same thing, but I am pretty religious in taking my calcium and all my other important and vital vitamins.

Sweetie, why would you not be faithful taking your vitamins. That is one of the most important rules to follow after RNY. I actuallly look forward to my calcium, it's like candy to me. Maybe you should try to find one that tastes good and is chewable. Those pills are hard to get down. I take the Bariatric Advantage Cherry Lozenges. Each has 400 mg. of calcium, and I take 5 a day. Not meaning to be critical but I just don't understand why someone would take this incredible opportunity and not make the most of it and reap all the benefits that come along with the surgery.

It's easy to slack off after taking the same vitamins day in day out. All day long, on a schedule... I know, I have had my moments as well. I get bored or tired of the tastes and just dread the flavors or just want to forget having to time everything right to get in al the vits in before bedtime! It's a lot of work especially, year after year...Unfortunately though,it's worth the effort because it will catch up to you as it did me, and bite you in the rear! Your long term health depends on your staying FAITHFUl to your vitamins! I suggest you go get labs and have ALL your vitamin levels checked...ALL OF THEM...Get a copy of the labs as well and start keeping track of your levels...My first 3 years, I was taking about 200-400 ius of Vit D in my calcium citrate wafers daily...By year 4 I began getting awful charlie horses and cramps, aching etc...My Vit D was 25...Calcium levels showed fine... I began taking 5000 ius daily...But when your Vit D is that low, you are not absorbing calcium! You need Vit D to absorb any calcium! Now at year 6...I take 50,000 ius of DRY Vit D3, 4-5 times a week just to try to get and then keep my levels in the 90's...Many surgeons don't tell you the REAL story on vitamins for long term PO RNY....Your body can store fat soluble vits (A, D, E and K) in the liver for several years before it becomes depleted and MUST BE TAKEN DAILY in other than fat soluble forms of those vitamins to keep those levels up. They don't tell you these things! They recommend kids vitamins that are not even compatable with RNY, let alone with ADULTS! Last year (5 years PO), my body stopped absorbing my sublingual B -12...I started taking 500 mcg a day and raised it to 1000 a day...It continued dropping...I began taking 2500 mcg a day and at year 6, I am slowy raising my B-12 with 10,000 mcg a day! I need shots now because it's just not working! Same with Vit A...I now have to take absurb amts ust to kep my levels in mid normal ranges...PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE you vitamin deficiency symptoms and GO GET LABS at least yearly....Once you vitamin levels begin to drop, you have to tak action...Some vits leave permanent damage when they become deficient for too long...Aching bones is a symtom of one of those that you do not want to ignore! Don't even get me started on Iron, selenium, zinc, magnesium...and all the other vitamin lows I have had to supplement since year 4! TAKE YOU VITAMINS SERIOUSLY! PLEASE!
