Question:
Over 7 Years Out and NOW GAINING!

I had open RNY gastric bypass back in 2002. I am almost 7 years out. I lost all my weight within 18 months down to my goal. I have had two children since then (now ages 6,4) and everything has been smooth sailing. I have been eating approx. 900-1200 calories a day (depending) and about 90-100 grams of protein a day. I have been doing this for years with good success. However, this past year of 2009...I began gaining. I have gained over 40 pounds just last year. I can't understand why! I HONESTLY haven't changed a thing and have actually increased my exercising the past couple weeks (2- 30 min brisk walks per day) I have only taken off two pounds in a month doing this. I am not on any medication or really doing anything different! Why does my body seem to want to get FAT again?? HELP ME!! I am honestly too embarrased to talk to my surgeon about this....They're gonna think it is my fault somehow. The only recourse I have is that I have lost and maintained my loss for over 6 years! What should I do?    — Shawnie S. (posted on January 20, 2010)

Go see your surgeon....this is not your fault, something is not right, maybe your thyroid, but you need to get checked. Congratulations to you for your SUCCESS, you are inspiring for the fact that you did so well, and had 2 children and have maintained for so long. Please go get yourself checked.

I think it's the way you present it to your surgeon. Don't go in expecting him to say it's your fault, instead, tell him what's going on and that you are 'asking' for assistance to get you back on track without going into who's fault or who's to blame. Playing the 'blame game' is a waste of time, when you both could be focussing on 'what's causing this?' and 'what are the next steps to resolve it'. I wish you luck my dear, and congrats on your successes.

with you doing everything you are suppose to be doing, I would go see your surgeon. It could possibly be your thyroid causing all the problems. Janet

The same thing happened to me but I'm a guy (no producing kids, LOL) What you may look at is if instead of mini meals you may have gone back to two or three meals eating too much at one time though still staying within your calorie range. Thus the elasticity of our stomachs have made it possible to stretch. To find out have your surgeon order a Barium Test. And go back to smaller many mini meals. In my case I had stretched it to far already and thus it would not shrink by itself and I ended up placing a Gastric Banding on top of my RNY Pouch. Thus forming another smaller pouch that I can now adjust the opening to the rest of my RNY Pouch. And I'm losing again.

I agree..check with your dr...but also take into consideration ..age..we tend to gain weight as we age ..if you are near or past menopause...seeing as you had kids just a few years ago..I doubt you are, but I thought I'd thorow that out there.lol Hugs,Kim

Shawnie I started having the same problem and when I was as the same point as you. Started gaining even though my eating habits had not changed. I already had hysterectomy but they had left my ovaries. Had them removed in 2008 and the wt gain started. Went to see my OB/GYN this week. He says lack of estrogen can affect your thyroid and will cause wt gain. I have started on evamist and prometrium this week in hopes it will help. Don't know if this applies to you but don't lose heart - I know exactly how you feel
