Question:
Losing Teeth

I just read Kellye's response about regrets. She said that she is losing her teeth. Is this a common occurance with WLS?? I am a little bit concerned. I had surgery August 13th and so far I have lost 93 lbs and my teeth are good. I can't eat too much protein which is afwful. So I supplement with protein shakes.    — FSUMom (posted on January 16, 2010)

I'm sorry if my answer concerned you. I don't think that it is that common. I think I have some crappy genetics on my side as well. My mom had lost a lot of her teeth by the time she had me (at age 21). I'll be curious to see if others are going through it but I did want to clarify that.

Hi there...Here is what I know.I TOO wondered these boards with questions and worries BEFORE,DURING, & AFTER my surgery. IT is a *LIFE ALTERING* experience. There is NO instruction guide or manual because every single person is different. One of the things I have noticed is 2 things specifically about everyone. #1 If the surgeon has a *good* program than his or her patient would have went through a huge program that answered many of these concerns and more with group meeting and various steps that would have had to be done BEFORE they would even do the surgery.Or at least have had the programs made available to the patient. #2 Many of the questions on here are a way for people to reach out and ask things(*I was one of them*), to find new friends, and start new beginings as they are with their up and coming surgery and new life. The bottom line is ,I hear the frustration and fear in so many folks about their hair, and nails, and teeth and skin and body functions etc..... This has a MAJOR shock to our body and ALL of it's functions. We have lived, well, many of us have lived a long long time in the condition we were in and then this earth shattering change takes place and our precious bodies goes through an unbelievable change. MANY CHANGES!!! Yes...my teeth suffered a little as did my hair,my skin and other things but one thing I would to stress here. Most things DO INDEED COME BACK TO SOME SORT OF A NORMAL STATE! It does take a little time though. I was one of the ones who constantly asked so many questions on here. One thing is...I was crazy for awhile and found from my SURGEON...that FAT produces ESTROGEN, and when we lose FAT as fast as some of us have, this drop in ESTROGEN is like a mad dash of PMS!!! lol Some folks got irritated with me asking so much, so I started to just Google EVERYTHING!! lol I still look on the computer every day for answer's to things. So relax.....you may get a cavity or lose some hair,or your skin get dry etc... but gosh.... LOOK AT US!!! Isn't all of it worth it??? God Bless!! :)

I saw a post like that about a year ago and yes it scared me to death.... I spoke to my Dr and my Nut and they both siad that it was a possibility that I could have issues, however if I take my vitamins and calcuim suplements and get enough protein in I should be fine. they also stated that it won't hurt anything to use a protein drink or shake to make sure that you get enough.
