Take a multi vitamin with Vitamin D. I was taking my multi and Viactive and I was too high in vitamin D so the Dr made me stop taking the Viative.

My surgery was on 5-10-6, and I'm now down about 120 pounds. I started at about 327. My Vitamin D level was way low for several blood tests. My doctor put me on the 50K units of vitamin D for 12 weeks--3 times. I continually failed the normal Vitamin D levels on my blood tests, even using these pills. I began using a new calcium/vitamin D and began a regimine of a GBG Liquid Vitamin, and I finally got into the low normal range, after failing 4 tests for normal vitamin d readings. Even though I walk outside daily, eat cheese, extra vitamin D pills, my vitamin D levels were consistantly low. Last blood test was the only one to pass the minimal vitamin D level. My story is on my profile site.

This is kind of a question with a comment, rather than an answer...but I was told to ONLY take Citracal for a source of both calcium and vit D. I also take a chewable daily multi-vitamin. I am just barely 5 weeks post op from lap RNY and down 30 pounds since surgery. I haven't had any blood tests yet, that's in January. I just wondered why one clinic says to take Viactiv, and others don't? They said Calcium citrate was the best in regards of absorbing into your system. I'm curious too because I struggle so in getting my calcium as I have to crush the pills and it's horrible to get down. I'm still struggling with swallowing pills. I wish you good luck and success with finding your answer. Congrats on the awesome weight loss! Hugs...Cheryl

Each person is different and each blood test is different. The lab at my surgeon's office showed on one test my iron was a little low. I tried taking an iron pill but it gave me super bad headaches and dizziness. I went to my regular PCP had a full spectrum blood test done, and for the past 3 blood tests my iron levels have been normal. I stopped taking the iron pills after the first blood test at my PCP's office came back normal. Come to find out, my mother and grandmother can't take iron pills either. So, it appears in my family we have no problems absorbing all protein needed from foods. Just keep trying different things and having your blood levels constantly checked. Good luck and welcome to the losing side! God bless!

Just go to the Vitamin store and purchase Vitamin D gel caps -- take 2 a day and call it a day --this way you are getting the 800 mg needed a day without reading the multivitamin pack to see if it has enough. I have the multivitamin as well as the Vitamin D. I usually take the Vitamin D at night -- my body is at rest and the vitamins can do their thing. Did you know that vitamin D also helps to keep you from falling? Isn't that something.

Being in sunlight lets the body make Vitamin D on its own. So maybe a little outside activity.....if you can find some wintertime sunshine where you live!! :) Congrats on the wt loss.

My doctor prescribed a Vitamin gel pill that had 50000IU of Vitamin D. I take it once a week for 6 weeks, then once a month. It has really helped.

I guess this time I have to disagree with everybody. :-( There is SO much info on vit D now and it was a big deal at the WLS conference this summer. So, first, Viactiv are calcium carbonate, which are useless to a WLS person, and we need more like 2000mg a day, not 1000mg. Then, our vit D MUST be vit D3 and it has to be dry. If it is in an oil form, we don't get any. So, dry form vit D3. And because there is so much new info on it now, we know we need to count our units in the thousands, not the hunhdreds. Our proximal RNY And lap bands start on 10,000 IU per day. (that's 2 tiny pills, caps with powder inside). Old lab studies will show levels of 20-57 and your doc might think 30 is "fine". However, if you are also running your PTH levels, those will not be "fine". New D levels are 32-100 so we want to be around 70, based on that range and newer studies. The RDA will soon be a MINIMUM of 1000, and that's for normies, who do not malabsorb their fat solubes vites. As for the sun, first you'd have to HAVE sun. Direct sun, so all of us not in CA or FL are out of luck. But let's say you CAN sit in the sun on the southernmost tip of FL and eat oily fish and egg yolks all day. We still cannot convert those forms of vit D into D3, which is the only form the body recognizes. There are now LOTS of studies out now that say that the old "30 minutes of direct sun on head & shoulders" gives enough vit D. But no, it doesn't. If you had, say, a level of 30, being able to do that MIGHT get you 5 more points, if you are fair skinned and on said beach. And if you need 40 more points to reach a safe level, you can't get that from sun, or any oily forms of vit D. It HAS to be dry form vit D3. And that is eensy lil capsules with powder. I wish I could make this thing paragraph (lessons welcome), so the summary: 1. Viactiv makes kidney stones, not bones & teeth 2. we need at least 2000mg a day of calcium citrate (many of us will need much more) 3. vit D needs far exceed those formerly thought and vit D MUST be vit D3, dry form 4. and one I didn't address... the idea that we are low in D, take a lot for a few weeks and voila, we're cure? No. We will ALWAYS malabsorb D, so we will ALWAYS have to address it. We can fix it, but then we have to keep it fixed. 5. the rx vit D is D2, in oil, so not as effective in delivering vit D to hungry bones, teeth, joints, mood, and yes, auto-immune disorders
