DO YOU HAVE TO EXERCISE ALOT WITH THE GASTRIC BYPASS

Your initial weight loss is not dependent upon regular exercise. Few of us can get enough calories to sustain a rigorous fat burning program for the first few months. BUT, EXERCISE IS CRITICAL TO LONG-TERM WEIGHT MAINTENANCE AND FOR GENERAL HEALTH. Exercise provides lots of benefits- it improves heart health, builds up bone density and helps curb hunger. Plus, it gives us something in our daily routine that isn't food oriented. So, you can easily lose weight with the RNY and not exercise, but it will be much tougher to maintain that weight if you don't have a long-term physical activity plan in place. For me, I love my regular walks and wish that I had started the habit when I was a newer post-op.

Exercise is crucial to keeping your body tone healthy. Depending on your age, floppy skin can appear after you have lose any considerable weight. Exercise can definitely help some if it cling to your body. I walk about 5 miles a day (in two trips) and am looking to purchase the Nintendo Wii Game System along with the Wee Fit to go with it. That way, I can exercise at night or bad weather days without having to go to a gym. It is great fun, keeps track of all progress, inclulding BMI and weight. Yeah, EXERCISE! Lyn Anders

For many of us pre op...the thought of exercise seemed impossible and completely not even worth a try with al the pain and medical problems...After surgery...the energy that returns is so unbelievable. The medical problems disappear one by one and the more we shrink the less pain we have...At this point, you are ready to take on the foreign world of exercise....You want to walk and go places and do things you couldn't or wouldn't do before. Hiking up a hill suddenly seems like a really fun thing to do...Exercise can be FUN activity after surgery. I swim and it hardly seems like a work out...but what a great way to tone every muscle in my body... I used to walk with a cane...now I can run (If someone wasa chasing me) LOL Well, some of us don't like that sort of exercise...but yes...you will need something active...It's easy though. No worries!

I am glad other people responded with the importance of exercise. I am just going to answer directly; I had RNY 5 months ago and have walked on my treadmill for 5 - 15 minutes may be 4 or 5 times in the last 5 months. I have lost 66 pounds so far, and am losing a steady 8 pounds or so per month. So, at least as for me, and for many other people I've talked to, they did NOT have to exercise in order to lose weight.
