Question:
Does anyone besides me feel really good 1 week after surgery?

I had gastric bypass surgery on 3/18 and I am doing exceptionally well. I keep waiting on some of the bad stuff to happen to me like I have been reading about others, but so far, nothing (knock on wood). I went for my post op visit today and they already put me on protein shakes, which I am tolerating wonderfully well. I am to start on soft proteins on Saturday. I am thrilled that everything is going so well, but I wondered if this is happening to anyone else out there.    — EugeneHinson (posted on March 26, 2008)

I had minimal problems adjusting too. I threw up once or twice--my fault for not thinking and taking a large drink of water or gulp of food. I tolerated shakes well, and tried the Isopure premade drinks--but those were disgusting. Be cautions when visiting a different doctor--like if you go to the ER for something. I got a cut on my finger, got it stitched and was given CIPRO. A few days later I thought I had terminal diarrhea, even though my diet had not changed. I consulted my doctor on another matter and mentioned this to him. He looked at my electronic chart and said the antibiotic was the problem. CIPRO is a good antibiotic, but it kills all good and bad bacteria, leaving your lower tract inbalanced, and diarrhea was the result. Next trip to the ER, I told the doc I had RNY. He told me he wasn't going to prescribe CIPRO then, and I got bactrum instead. Many of us have minimal problems, but most posts tend to be about problems. Just like the tv newscasts--got stuff doesn't make it on TV, but boy you think the whole world is rotten, as they primarily publicize the bad stuff in the world.

I had my gastric bypass in Aug. 2002, was on semi solids witin a couple of days and soft solids, like thin sliced turkey cold cut and soft cheese within the first week. Never had any trouble at all, except for the initial pain on the left side where they cut the muscle; that was my only real 'pain'. I also never had dumping and sadly am able to eat anything without trouble. I did gain back some of my weight because I was sick and in bed for months, but I am back to working it off. I'll never regret having the surgery.

You sound just like me. I had surgery 2/28/08 and wondered if something was going wrong on the inside because I felt as if I never had any surgery. I am very glad to hear that you are doing so well. I think the hardest part for you is going to be to remember that you DID have the surgery!!

I was 4 yrs post op this week on the 24th, and to this day, never one problem. No dumping, no nuttin! I just continue to follow all the rules and have kept the 230 lost pounds off. Just be thrilled you have it so great, it makes the weight loss that much sweeter. Congrats on your surgery, and may the remainder of your healing be as easy. Cindi 3.24.04 - 230# and maintainimg

Not me, but I think the younger you are and the less over 40 BMI you are the easier it is. Glad that you are doing so well. Just remember when you have that bump in the rood, you got your bump at lot later than others, so enjoy the ride. Best of success.

So many more people do well than not...Those are the ones that have no questions or anything to post because they are smooth sailing into their new life...I didn't post for years! Only came back to socialize and see how others have done and just never left since! Congrats and many best wishes for continued smooth waters!

I am 10 days post op and it has been pretty smooth too. I do find I get tired very easily. Tomorrow I see the MD for my post op visit and I am looking forward to movingon to smooth foods. I do find that if I drink my protein drink to fast, I get a stomach ache, but so far nothing has come back up!

Sure it is. There are lots of us who do not have any problems to speak of. I didn't. Vomited just twice at the beginning and then I learned the feeling of being full and didn't push myself that far anymore. You must be doing a good job of gaging what your body can take. It is a real art knowing how much to drink and eat at one time. I did not goof up until I ate my first meal of real food. Keep in mind the rule you will always live with no, absolutely no liquid thirty minutes before, during, and after a meal. It really makes a difference in how much you will take off and keep taking off. Have a wonderful journey. God Bless, Norma

Hello, I am doing just as well as you are. I had LapBand surgery on 3/19 and I feel great. I have lost 12 lbs since surgery. I started on protein shakes on 3/20 and my first weigh in and post op visit is this monday 3/31 and I will be starting diced proteins and mushy/pureed foods then. Last night I worked out and went for a 1 mile walk and got 13 hrs sleep. I feel energized and got some well needed sleep. Karen M 336.8/298.4/155 Consult/Now/Goal

I am 3 1/2 weeks (March 3rd was my surgery date) and have had no serious problems. Just a little pull in my side, which the doctor says is normal. But all foods have been tolerated and I am slowly introducing 3 new things every week into my diet. Good luck, glad to hear that all is going well. Just keep doing what your doctor told you to do and eat and you will be fine. I am 20 pounds down.

March 1 here. Absolutely NO negative effects other than the pain of surgery and the pull of stitches which lasted bout 3 days for the first and a week for the second. I had pretty severe arthritis before the surgery, chronic diarrhea, chronic muscle pain from Fibro-Myalgia, a spastic colon, migraines, sleep apnea, and fairly severe diabetes which was flirting with 200 points on a regular basis while I was taking 2000 MG of Glucovance 5 DAILY and TWO shots of 35 units of 30/70 insulin a day and an occasional shot of REGULAR insulin as needed. In just 3 weeks I had dropped 32 pounds and dropped ALL of my diabetes medications! I actually had to drop the last glucovance pill because it was TOO much medication for me! I came home from a church outing on Easter and started shaking and feeling hot. I took a blood sugar reading and found my level to be 53! I had to get some sugar into me FAST to keep from having my blood sugar from dropping lower and going into a diabetic coma. Since then I have not needed ANY medication for my diabetes. I have since continued to drop weight at about a pound to a pound and a half a day. I no longer have much pain from arthritis. My Fibro-Myalgia has quited a great deal and it really only bothers me when I am tired. I no longer have diarrhea or the spastic colon. I have had to reduce the pressure on my C-PAP machine because it started blowing air into my intestines because it no longer had to fight against my sinuses. About the ONLY thing that seems to remain unchanged is the migraines. Perhaps in time THAT will change. I don't know. There are plenty of SKINNY people with those so I suspect not. Good luck, Hugh

I'm gald to hear that you are doing so well. I also, have had the same experience. I had lap RNY on 3-10-08 and couldn't have asked for things to go better. I think my worst experience was having to do the swallow study the morning after surgery (YUCK!!!! :) ). I have always been a "fast" eater and that is something that I am having to remember to chew, chew, chew. Keep up the good work!

I had RNY on 3-11-08. I have done exceptionally well. No nausea or vomiting. Just site pain. I started eating scrambled eggs, chicken, fish on day 4. I could not tolerate the consistancy of puree so I chew 30 times. No Problems at all. As I tell everyone "results not typical".

You GO Eugene!! It is so nice to actually hear something POSATIVE on this website!! I am having RNY on April 8th, and from reading this column I know everything that can and will go wrong, so it's nice to see all the other answers from people who had it go smoothly, like you, and like I hope to do!! I had my surgery on 3/3/08. By day 4 I was ready to go and had a hard time restraining myself. I had no complications, no nausea or vomiting and no complications whatsoever. I also had no problems adjusting to the thick liquid diet. Now, I'm almost 4 weeks out and I've still had no problems. Gotta keep reminding myself that I DID have surgery. Guess we just got lucky. Hi Eugene. Same here - Lap RNY on March 24th. I had no problems at all other than a bad cold right after surgery. I can eat anything so far as long as I wait the 30minutes before and after food. Haven't thrown up at all. I'm on pureed foods right now, and I can tolerate pork with shallots and garlic, all pureed. My husband keeps asking, "Are you sure they did the surgery and didn't just take our money?". So, glad to see I am not the only one either! Take care, Carol
