Question:
How long before surgeon removes staples?

I had RNY on 7/1/08 and don't have appointment to remove staples until 7/21/08. Staples very painful, red and inflamed. Is it normal to wait 3 weeks before they are removed?    — Magdalena52286 (posted on July 12, 2008)

My sergeon used a form of medical crazy glue on my insisions and I never had a single stitch on the outside. Noting hurt except to cough or wall at first. Sorry to hear that you are in pain. However, each surgeon has their own ways and reasons. I did my researh up front, and I went to a lot of support groups and heard what you are saying before. I liked this one sergeon more for the fact he was overwheight most of his life and had the surgery himself, so I felt he knew what we were talking about. I guess I would have had him do the surgery even if he used staples. Hope you are feeling better soon. Try to call your sergeon and ask if you cna have them out sooner?

Sounds like you might have an infection. You need to call your surgeon ASAP ... It's probably NOT a good idea to wait until Monday - they will have someone on call for the weekend - call and talk to that person. Better safe than sorry, right?

We had our surgery on the same day and my stitches came out on Friday (10 days). Seems too long to me.

I would not think so everyone I know including myself had the staples removed in 1 week that was painful enough...Good Luck!

Red and inflamed should send you a signal itself.....Call your Dr and inform them....that doesn't sound good. Pam / Ft Worth........Bandster Bites [email protected]

Hi, ANY time I have had a need to reach my Dr. for a question..HE & his staff have been right there for me & family! I of course think/know I have had the absolute BEST care by ALL. My surg was 7/01/08, staples came out 7 days after WITH NO pain. As a matter of fact my grabdkids wanted to watch and they were able to. I had to have other repairs done during surg, but all in all it went well. Please speak with your Dr.s office..they are the PRO..we are the patient. IF I COULD GIVE ANY ADVISE LISTEN TO YOUR NEW GUT!! Wish you well,Julie

Hi, I'm a certified nurse assistant (used to be called nurse aides) and the little i know of medicine tells me that if something is red and inflammed it needs to be checked out by your surgeon ASAP. No, 3 weeks isn't too long for staple removal but that's if everything's looking pink and healthy..which yours is not...call the office right now, o.k.??

I'm an RN and 3 weeks for staples seems way too long. Usually no more than 10 days give or take. Call your surgeon asap please. Do you have a fever? Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I agree with the others. Call your surgeon ASAP! By the way, what staples? I went home with my incisions covered by steri-strips and I guess they used dissolving sutures to close me up. Did you have open surgery?

Mine were three weeks also...and mine too got inflamed and red because the strips they glued were latex and the glue also had something that irritated the staple sites....I used neosporin with pain relief on them and my surgeon said that was the perfect thing to do...It helped...but I removed the strips myself because they were just eating blisters into my skin...(The oil in neosporin loosened them enough to remove somewhat easily.) The staples though were such a relief to get out...They just pulled them out with needle nose looking pliers...It didn't hurt at all...but it was nail biting....If I'd have known how easy it was to remove them...I wonder if I would have? LOL No..It pretty much creeped me out... You might want to call your doc...and see if they can come out sooner and ask about "neosporin with pain relief" until you can get them out...If it continues to be bad...show up without an appointment and lift your shirt for the nurse and if they still don't pull them out...tell them you will if they dont! LOL Yes I would do that!
