Question:
8 weeks post op rib and hip bone pain.

I am 8 weeks post op laprny and have been having aching rib bones on both of my sides under my arms and both my hip bones. I haven't had any injuries and find no reason for the pain. Has anyone else experienced this. Just seems like my bones ache. I have lost 47lbs so far and otherwise feel good. Thanks!    — hannahsmom1014 (posted on October 25, 2008)

I didn't have aching rib bones, but I did ache just about everywhere else when I had to be off my Celebrex for surgery. My hips, back, legs, shoulders and neck were absolutely miserable. As far as the ribs go... have you been doing a lot of coughing or something that would make the muscles between your ribs sore? Have you stopped taking your anti-inflammatories? If so, could have something to do with it. I remember after an exploratory laparotomy many years ago, my worst pain was my sternum,,, even worse at times than the surgical pain. After a couple of days... a huge bruise developed and what my surgeon figured out was that it was where one of his assistants rested his/her elbow while holding back retractors for a long time while he worked inside the abdominal cavity. Ouch. Don't know what to tell you, my hips are always aching with my arthritis. Check with the doc and see what he thinks. Swimming is about the only thing that helps me. Best of luck, Dawn

congrats- welcome to the world of weight loss and all the little foibles that come with it. I will be 5 yrs out in march, and since i was maybe 5 weeks out, i have hurt in and on the craziest places. My hind end is just bone, when i sit, OMG, i still have to switch from one bun to another frequently. My ribs still hurt, you can feel all the ridges of my spine etc. You will be colder this winter, hotter in summer. You are losing your bodies insulation. I hated sleeping with anything that had sleeves or legs- even in so calif, its sweat pants and sweatshirt during the winter- i shudder to think if i were in iowa, i would need to be wrapped in fur LOL. Get used to it, the pains are worth being slim and gorgeous! Cindi 3.24.04 -230# NG, i still have to switch from one bun to another frequently.

Your ribs might hurt due to many things. Most likely because they had to rest on them to perform the surgery. I know mine did, for a few weeks... Ask your surgeon about it, just to make sure nothing else is going on. Good luck !!!

Have you had labs? Vit D deficiency can cause aching bones! Unlike osteoporosis which is painless until you break something...Vit D def can cause bones to ache and is often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia...Hope you are taking your calcium citrate with Vit D3... This info from the "American Society for Nutrition"

Hi, Robin. I agree with other responses posted here. To throw one more thing into the mix, you might want to check with your doctor to rule out any problems with your gall bladder.

Hello, Well at least I am not the only one that had rib and hip pain.I am alommost 1 year posy op rny and as I have been losing the weight especially if its a week that I have been that I lost more weight than others I may get these pains. i have gone to the doctor they ran many tests from blood work, to ultrasounds and x-rays, they just told me that it was due to the muscles tightening, and spasming. I would still call your doc just to see what he says, and make sure that you don't have any mineral or nutrtion defiences. have you been carrying your daughter alot, this could also cause some muscle pain, especially if your are carrying her around the house on your hip, like us moms do, or have you been exercising like doing sit ups, or crunches, that also could cause some discomfort. Hope this helps! Take Care Lisa

Give it time. Use your pain meds and rest. Your body needs time to heal. Vinnigirl, RN

Try a good "liquid" vitamin / mineral supplement like VEMMA. Is "packed" with anti-inflammatory nutrients and 1000 IU Vitamin D3, very important for calcium absorption. Go to www.TrySomeVemma.com
