My understanding of in-network vs. outside network is that if it comes down to it and there's no one who does a procedure that's deemed medically necessary then the insurance company has to cover an out-of-network provider the same as if it were in-network. Clear as mud? Get a copy of your policy or insurance manual, if you don't already have one. Read it thoroughly. This is just like eating an elephant. The only way to get it done is one bite at a time.

Sorry I don't have a surgeon name for you but I do have another suggestion that might help in your search. You could try posting this question on the Louisiana state message board too. Chances are there is someone there who may know of one in or near your area. If all else fails just call your insurance company help line and ask for a provider list or their company website. My insurance company has a website that allows you to search by state, specialty, etc. Best of luck.

Thanks for the feedback...unfortunately this particular procedure has to be in network or not at all...I asked for "gap" coverage/approval and the response was that even if it meant traveling out of state to find an in-network surgeon, I would have to...which I am willing to do, obviously. I would just feel more comfortable if my surgeon were nearby in case of post-op complications and for my follow up. Thank you for taking the time to help me!

The Louisiana discussion board suggestion is a good idea...I will try that. Thanks!

Sherry, I am in Louisiana as well. A good place to start is whyweight.com They helped me to find a Doctor and a place that would accept my insurance. Even though I am in the New Orleans metro area, the closest approved Dr. was in Lafayette. That is where I went and they were great! Good Luck with your search.

Call your insurance company and ask. They will be able to tell you who is in Baton Rouge and if there is noone, they can tell you who the next closest doctor is. Good luck.
