Question:
What pre-op tests etc need to be done for a RNY?

I have had my psych eval, 6 month diet with my dr, EKG, TSH levels, etc and now I am just waiting for the insurance company to give us the green light before I get to meet with the surgeon. What other kinds of testing is going to be required? I have seen some members mention sleep tests and such. Also how long is the average I will need to be on a liquid diet before the surgery? I am going to St Alexius Hospital in St. Louis. Thank you in advance for your response! :) ~Bobbie J.    — mensing03 (posted on October 16, 2009)

Personally, I had to do 2 sleep studies, one for a new diagnosis, one to get my new number. I had to do a liquid diet for 2 days prior to surgery. Hope that helps. Good luck.

I am not sure what your insurance or doctor will require, but mine is having me do an EKG, a lung test, xray of the lungs, a scope. I have a friend who went to a doctor where you are going, she was on a liquid diet for 7 days leading up to her surgery, but she didn't have to do all the stuff I mentioned for pre-op testing. Good luck!

Hi Bobby, I think it really depends on your doctor and his findings when he examines you. I have a staff of about 5 doctors with the program I'm with and they required basic tests; blood work up, liver sonogram, and a heart sonogram. The only reason for the heart sonogram was because of a heart murmur the doctor detected so she wanted to make sure my heart would take the surgery. As it all turned out I was fine with just a sonogram and release for surgery which I will have on Oct 29th (gastric bypass). It was my surgeons suggestion to also have a colonoscopy since I had never had one at my age (55), but it wasn't necessary for the surgery. So I have that scheduled later after my bypass. So nothing drastic but I have a clearer picture now of my health which has made me feel so much more comfortable going into surgery at my size (311 lbs). I did start a protein liquid shake and protein bar diet 2 days ago which I will be on for the next couple of weeks, up to the day before the surgery. It's really not bad. The protein shakes is something I didn't think I could get through, but I've learned by adding a cup of ice, 2 pkgs of Splenda sweetener, and blending it for a minute or so, that my shakes actually taste a bit like a REALLY, REALLY soft serve yogurt. It takes some of the grittyness away. So all in all I think your doctors just want to make sure you are in the best shape possible for your surgery which will make for a speedy recovery. God Bless in your adventure!

I had/have to get consult with surgeon, Sleep study, psych eval, nutrition assesment, Upper endoscopy, PFT,medical clearance from my PCP and finally meet again with the coordinator and surgeon to sign my consents and permits. Because I don't have any cardiac or pulmonary issues, I didn't need clearance from those docs.My liquid diet is for one week prior to surg.
