the band is contra indicated for gerd, so is the rny, my gerd is so bad that I had to have a nissan wrap, cured the gerd(barrettes esoph,) had the Hiatal hernia fixed, 10 years ago, niether the band or rny are now compatable, I can only have a VSG,the top of a DS, which is the prefered treatment for one with severe gerd, hiatal hernia, visit the vsg or ds forum to learn more,

In regard to hiatal hernia, realize that this is not the same as GERD. Not all patients with a hiatal hernia have GERD, while most patients with GERD do have a hiatal hernia. A surgeon must make a special effort to repair a hiatal hernia during bariatric surgery, while GERD most often improves without any additional effort if a Roux en Y gastric bypass is done. In addition, as mentioned by a previous respondent, the Lap Band and VBG are associated with worsening of GERD.

YES... AND YES AGAIN. I am currently banded and am dealing with severe reflux/gerd. I am also removing my band for more than just those reasons.

HELLO. I HAD GERD/ACID REFLUX FOR YEARS PRIOR TO MY LAP BAND 4 MONTHS AGO. I HAD IT SO BAD AT TIMES I HAD TO GO TO THE ER, I FELT LIKE I HAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK. I HAD ESOPHOGITIS SO BAD I COULD NOT SWALLOW GOOD. NOW SINCE I HAVE MY LAP BAND ALL THOSE GERD PROBLEMS ARE GONE. I HAVE NOT TAKEN NEXIUM SINCE BANDING...NO MORE COUGHING AND CHOKING AT NIGHT SINCE MY LAP BAND PLACEMENT. I DON'T MAINTAIN A VERY TIGHT FILL WITH MY LAP BAND SO I HAVE NOT PROBLEMS, THIS BAND SO FAR IS THE BEST THING I EVER DONE. I HAVE LOST CLOSE TO 60 POUNDS IN FOUR MONTHS AND TAKE NO MEDICATION...IT ALWAYS BETTER TO ASK THESE QUESTIONS TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE WALKED THE WALKED....NOT JUST TALK TO THE TALK AND GO BY HEARSAY....

I suffered with hiatal hernia/GERD for many years. I was on protonix daily and was hurting if I didn't take it each day. After my surgery on August 10, 2005 I took 2 pills the first week after my surgery and since then I have been pill and symptom free. When you're not having that reflux your body can start to heal. I hope it is for everyone, but at least for me I know that my GERD went away after surgery.

I was refused a lap band because of a small hiatal hernia. It was explained to me that there would be more pressure put on the hernia, potentially making it worse. Even if they tried to repair the hiatal hernia, it would still be too much pressure on the site and possibly cause it to re-herniate. In hindsight, I am very happy I didn't qualify for the band. I think for myself, I am much better off with the RNY.

The best erson to answer this question is a surgeon. I don't know about the hernia but I was told by 2 surgeons that the lap band has the possibility of making my reflux worse. I have the DS and that one does have a high success rate with reducing reflux because of teh weight loss. Doesn't "cure" but takes away a couple of the contributing factors.
