Question:
Is it safe for me to use suppliments for my workouts after having RNY surgery?

I don't mean fat burners, but things like whey protein and creatine. I've tried to research this to no avail.    — Lgill (posted on June 16, 2007)

Hi there, Yes, I don't know about creatine; but protein is definately YES! As a matter of fact my Dr & Nut are adiment about it. We neeed between 80-100 mg of protein daily and we can not get it all in with food, because we do not absorb all we eat. I hope your doc & nutrutionist tell you this is important. You also need to take vitamins & calcium.. Good Luck, Judy R

If you start doing high impact you may even have to hit carbs before had so as not to have a hypoglycemic event (low blood sugar) with is common for post bariatric patients. Talk to a train that has worked with bariatric or diabetic patients. It is always best when you get this from a professional in a field, I would ask a trainer and or an nuterionist

Hi Lavelle. Protein powders are highly encouraged after surgery. They provide protein in larger quantities than regular food, and help your body heal and help strengthen your body after surgery. I would stay far away from creatine for two reasons. First, I don't think a regular body should be taking this. It is dangerous at worst, and a mystery at best. I don't think it will be helpful for any body in the long run. The 2nd reason I think it is not good for a wls patient is the same reason we are asked to not drink. Anything you take goes more direct to your liver than prior to wls. For alcohol, when you drink it, you have a greater possibility of causing liver damage than before surgery because more of the alcohol goes to your liver. The same for drugs or "products" like creatine. More of it will have to be processed by your liver. You need to protect your liver from these things. Eat protein, drink protein shakes or whey protein, but stay away from stuff that may cause damage to your liver. I think creatine is in that category. It is your choice, but my vote is no. Take care.
