Question:
One week before surgery and they told me only water and protein

Is there some other things you can have like cottage cheese or a vegetable I really feel sick to my stomach    — dbobb32 (posted on March 27, 2007)

Diane, I was not permitted soft foods until about two weeks post-op. In the first week, I was told protein shakes, sugar-free jello, sugar-free pudding, broth, and sugar-free popsicles.

Diane, I'm sorry, I thought you were one week pos-op. Either way, these are the same things I ate on my pre-op diet, plus any low fat cream soups.

I was told 2 weeks pre op to replace 2 of my meals with the protein shake and a lot of water and eat only 1 regular meal. It all depends on who your surgeon is. Good Luck!

Good protein choices are eggs, cheese, nuts, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, protein shakes, beans. Check labels to make sure there is protein in everything you are eating.

Well I was told to do the Optifast diet plan or better yet just lose as much weight as possible. The day before clear liquids, and after midnight nothing. Which is cool because hopefully I will be sleep.

My surgeon told me me liquid diet 1 week before surgery. The reason is to shrink the liver before surgery. I snuck in small salads, no meat or anything, just lettuce and only dipped my fork in the dressing instead of pouring it over the lettuce along with my protein drinks, hot/cold tea and juice. That worked for me, I lost 8lbs that week.

It depends on what you were told. My surgeon puts us on a skim milk diet.

I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-op, and it was tough. I think it goes a long way to help you prepare for the weeks following, and of course it does help shrink your liver, which makes the surgery easier. I used boost shakes...chocolate tasted best to me...really cold. You can also try some liquid proteins. GNC carries one called isopure, and isn't really that bad. Each one gives you 40 grams of protein. When you're feeling hungry, try sugar free jello with cool whip free on top (gives you two different textures). Special K also has a new protein water that tastes great! It tastes like the liquid in a fruit salad! When I started on the liquids, I had trouble with everything being sweet, so I would slip in chicken broth to overcome that. Best of luck to you!

Hi Diane, I assume you are still PRE op? That is how I read your question. If this is so, my answer would be that cottage cheese is protein, so is milk, these things are very good for you and soft. The thing about veggies and fruits is that they can play with your intestines, and they need to be basically clean when you have this surgery, it helps the surgeon a lot. The other thing is are you willing to follow instructions? It is a test of your will. I really encourage you to follow your doctors advice completely. As soon as you start making your own rules, you set yourself for failure after surgery. The nausea could be from anxiety over the surgery and the changes you are gonna be going through. It is a tough head game, so you need to be mentally prepared. If you are post op, I would still say cottage cheese and milk, even yogurt are good protein sources and digest well. Take care, Patricia P.
