Question:
How many caloried are actually absorbed in rny?

I know a lady posted a question similar to this before, but I didnt really understand the answers. My question is, if we consume 600 calories a day (i had open rny), then how many of those are actually taken in the body. I know that is one way the rny helps you lose weight because even if you eat 600 calories, not all of them are absorbed.    — jackie L. (posted on January 28, 2009)

You will malabsorb about 20 % of your nutrition...Most RNYers have proximal RNY because it is the least radical...It is fairly rare for a surgeon to do distal because it is so severe. TRUST that you malabsorb and take vitamins after surgery for the rest of your life and get yearly labs to ensure your levels are good to prevent malnutrition. So... 600 calories minus 20 % is 480 calories.

Sorry...I am a teensy bit ADD and I always KNOW what I mean...but sometimes I don't explain myself so others do, I think... If you eat 600 calories and subtract 20 % you are only eating 480 calories with 120 calories not absorbed! How's that?! I get easily confused too...especially with numbers! I'm good at math though, but can't always explain how! LOL
