Question:
Severe sweating at night

Hello all/ Hola a tod@: I am nearing my 2nd year anniversary. I had RNY surgery on May 2, 2006 with Dr. Kurian. She is awesome. Anyway, I have been noticing for quite some time that I tend to sweat heavily at night. I leave the sheets drenched. I have no other reason for this to be happening (medically) So, I am wondering if it has to be a result of the post-op stuff. Can any one shed some light if you have experienced the same thing? It comes and goes for me. However last month I was sweating every night. Had to change the sheets all the time. Gracias, PW    — mariposarosa (posted on April 8, 2008)

Depending upon your age... could this be menopause or peri-menopause? Same thing happened to my mother when she was going through menopause. Karen

Hi, are you post or peri-menopausal? I experienced the same symptoms for quite a while before going on a dose of HRT. I don't actually know what caused the night sweats but I can empathize. For me, it happened when I had lost a lot of weight but before I regained it all and had RNY. I don't know if it had anything to do with poor nutrition. I recommend you go see your PCP or gynecologist. It's a miserable thing and ruins one's sleep. Please go see your doctor so that something can be done for you. -@li

I read your profile and notice you are only 30, but I would suggest that it is the release of estrogen from your fat cells. When we gain a large amount of weight, our fat cells store estrogen in high amounts. I am older and had my surgery when I was 52, but experienced this exact thing, not as bad, but still constant 'night sweats' once I lost a good amount of weight. I even had a period after not having one for about 14 months. Talk to your doctor and unless they find something really wrong, I'd tell you to just be patient and it will pass. If you go online, I'm sure you'll be able to find some writings on how the estrogen stores in our fat cells (so more fat....more estrogen storage). Relax and enjoy your new, healthier self. Blessings....

I'm not convinced that your symptoms are from the surgery...although don't rule it out completely. Looks like you need some tests done to determine the cause.

I had the sweating problem and it was extremly scary to me. My doctor had me tested for everything and nothing came back as being wrong. I had one situation that was going on with me that both my regular doc and my WLS doc agreed may have been my problem. For some reason that we have still not figured out I have no desire to eat at all. As a result of that they believe that my body was acting weird because of it. I was told to take an anti depresssant that helped me sleep through the sweats but I still wanted to know why it was happening exactly. I was put on strict eating program and as soon as started doing that the sweats when away.

Thank you for your posts. At this time I am seeing my gyn and I got some test results back and have to wait for the second results to see if it comes back okay. Otherwise, I wll have to have my cervix examined. I was having some serious hormonal issues due to estrogen and my periods were very heavy and painful. I passed out at work one day. This occurred last year-2007. However, things have gotten better since I have been on b.c.pills. I am curious as to how long it takes for the estrogen to break down in your body. I started out at 329 and now I am 193 and still losing. In my earlier post I said that there was nothing medical. I should have followed that with Yet. Given the latest with my GYN. Nevertheless, other medical issues dealing with night sweats are fine(test wise) or as yet unknown. I want to thank you all for your posts and continued post if any. I greatly appreciate it. I am really happy that this website is here and we can all share. Se lo agradeco mucho. Peace, PW

I read all the post and including the April 8 post. I suffered irregular periods for a number of years leading up to menopause at at 47. I was in my 30's when I became irregular. I was placed on B.C. pills which helped quite a bit for a long time. My Dr. said I was a bit young for menopause but it was not unknown. I also will make a mental note of this problem since I hope to have LapBand this year. Good luck.

I know you are young, but go to your regular doctor and get a blood test for menopause. I visited mine and she said to me "you might be heading toward menopause", and took the blood test, I am not only heading toward it, but all the way through it. I am older than you, but it can happen to those around the age of 30 as well. Get it checked out. A simple blood test can tell. Take care. Patricia P.

I am 4 yrs post-op and the night sweats I used to think was due to my being diabetic. But my blood sugars are within normal range since wls. I did notice that if I ate small meals throughout the day and 1 small piece of fruit at 8 or before I went to bed the sweats were not present. I asked my surgeon and family dr and they ran blood work and other tests and being 48 yrs old and premenopausal could be the problem. I noticed that since it has started to get warmer the sweating has gotten worse during the day and nights are better since as I said before doing the small meals throughout the day. I don't eat breakfast lunch and dinner per say. I just do small meals and a few snacks to keep my blood sugars ok. But seems like it is what the drs came up for me that I was premenopausal and since having wls at 44 yrs old the symptoms got worse. I opted not to take the HRT.
