Question:
Is their anyone out there that has been free from...

Any complications? I know the risk and benefits, common problems as well as not so common problems some have. I would like to know if anyone out there had a complication free journey? I am interested to hear from those that didn't have to struggle. Also, I would like to hear from anyone who after surgery that had any regrets and why? This journey is sensationalized by some I want to hear from the others. I want the ying and the yang of this journey. Thanks for sharing.    — A. Me (posted on January 24, 2010)

Hi this is Tammi I had RNY July of 2008 I have lost 203 pounds to date I started out at 368 pounds I have had no commplications,I hope not to loose any more weight, I had my galbladder removed in July of this last year other then that nothing to do with weight surgery I no longer have problems with my bp, or my feet, I still have back pain and have had a breast reduction. The pain is due to posture and deep muscle problems, I wish I could have this resolved because of the pain, using my arms etc any way I would do this surgery again in a sec, I have a lot of lose skin and that sucks but I would rather have the skin then the weight in my own opinion. I am glad I did it. My hair did not start to fall out until the last 6 months, that sucks was not to bad, seems to be better now. I really have had no complications. I still take vitamins and eat 5 or 6 times a day small meals.I exercise and walk. Any other questions please email me and ask, best of luck Tammi

Hello, I had gastric bypass surgery on Dec. 14, 2009 and I am so glad to say that I have not had one problem. I was sore for a few days after the surgery, but that should be expected due to what we just put our bodies through. I didn't even take my pain medicine when I came home from the hospital. I truly believe that if you follow ALL of the instructions that your doctor gives you, that this thelps with a speedy recovery and to prevent complications! This goes from the limited amount of exercise right after the surgery (mostly walking) to the limitations on what you are able to eat at each stage after your surgery, to vamping up your exercise once your doctor gives you the OK. But you have to remember that our bodies are all different and some of us may react differently than others - so don't be disappointed if you do encounter and problems. If you do, talk to your doctor about them right away! I have already lost 40 pounds in the month and a half since my surgery and I feel fantastic. I knew that in the long run I would feel so much better, but I had no idea that I would feel this good so soon. Good luck with your journey and I hope that yours goes as smoothly as mine did :-)

I have had a fantastic recovery. No problems to speak about. So far 18 months later I have not lost any hair. I can't complain about much of anything. I can eat anything I want. I followed my doc and nutritionists warmings and stuck to their plan and I think that is why I have been successful. Not to say I never stray off course. But I try to get right back to the food plan. I am very happy with my results

Hi Tina, I just read your profile and you seem like the perfect profile for WLS. It amazes me how many nurses I see that have this surgery. I am one of the those people that if its going to happen, its going to happen to me. I even lost weight on a cruise. With that being said, I have breezed through my RNY. I didn't wait until I had terrible problems. I was borderline HP, Cholesterol, pre diabetic, but miserable. I worked on my feet daily and have the veins to show for it!! I had trouble with low blood pressure the day after surgery and I stayed an extra day that has pretty much been it. I was a slow loser in my opinion but slow and steady wins the race right? lol I say I am the poster child for WLS, I have followed the directions I was given, lost more than my dr thought, and have been lucky that I look in proportion (with clothes on). Again like most people, my only regret is not doing it sooner. We all have lost and gained the weight over and over, we know what to do. My husband didn't believe in WLS but supported me. He lost 40 pounds last year on his own, only to regain it after 6 months. He had the sleeve done in September. Hopefully we both have a long happy future now.

Hi, I had RNY on 12/12/08. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. I went through a divorce and RNY at the same time. I have not had any complications, with the exception of food getting stuck a couple of times which truly was my own fault for not chewing well enough. Those situations fixed themselves after a few hours of discomfort. I was on 9 medications before surgery for diabetes, high BP, high Cholesterol and restless leg syndrome. I am now on zero meds, I take my vitamins and exercise and follow my doctors food plan. I have lost 118 pounds and am beyond both my doctor and my own goal weight. I am a size 4/6 depending on the clothes. My only regret is not doing this sooner. Life has never been this good. I can do anything. Good luck with your choice. I am sure that if you have RNY you will not regret it, there are very few people that I have met along the journey that regret it and those that do generally didn't follow their doctors advice and either haven't lost as much as they wanted or have had complications from doing stupid stuff, like the girl who ate a steak 3 weeks post op and ended up back in the hospital. Be smart, follow your doctors orders and you will be fine!

I had the RNY 4 yrs ago and I haven't had any problems, other than I didn't chew my food well enough in the solid food phase. But I had my surgery, and was out the next day from the hospital. They told me there was nothing they can do for me, I was doing so well. I followed my dr's instructions, phases 1-4 to the "T". I didn't cheat and eat solid food when I wasn't supposed to. I think that has a lot to do with ones recovery. If you eat solid food before the pouch is ready it could damage it, I say "could" not always. But people try to eat solids when it is swollen, sore and tender. They need to baby their pouch. I also think, that making sure you have a good "bariatric surgeon" that has done a lot of these surgeries helps too. YOu don't want to find any doctor like a general practice doc that has only 12 hrs experience under his belt and can be considered a bariatric surgeon. Ask questions to your doctor. How long have they been doing "RNY" surgeries. Really look into your drs background. That is pretty much it for me. I just followed his instructions, checked him out good. (I found him on this website) and I have lost 90 lbs and have kept it off for 4 yrs. I went from 230 lbs to 138 lbs. I did put my journey into my profile. Hope this helps. It isn't an easy journey I might add, but it is so worth the few months of following a drs plan/direction etc.

My surgery was 7/8/08 and I've not had any complications other than the first few days I had severe nausua. I did lose some hair at about 3 months but I wore wigs for a few months while my hair grew back. Constipation has been a problem but Miralax is taking care of that. I started out wanting to lose 103 lbs. and I've lost 70. Can't seem to get the remainder moving but I'm working on. I couldn't be happier with the surgery. It has changed my life. Losing weight doesn't take away all your problems, but it sure makes life better!!

Hi! I am one of the Poster children for the surgery! Had surgery at 8:10 am was out by 10 (rny), up walking the halls by 8pm that night and would have been sooner but they didnt have a room ready for me. catheter out the next day, never touched the morphine pump the whole time i was there, the strongest thing i took was a tylenol and that was just for a headache. I was prepared for pain and being in LA LA land with drugs...never happened. no problem with the swallow test and started sipping water saturday morning. went home on monday, never touched the pain meds i had prepared for. NOT A DROP!!!! the next day, I was tired...for sure, but was out looking at condos. went back to work full time 2 wks.. and could have been sooner actually. I am 5 months out 86 pounds down, only threw up once and that was my fault... i ate too fast ... haven't had dumping... I followed the rules and my doctor (cleveland clinic in Fla.) are strict... Everybody has a different journey... the only thing that i struggled with was after surgery blues.... but going back to work helped alot and getting up and moving. mostly that is the perceived death of food.... but you are not hungry..it was all in my head. Good Luck, you will do great!

Totally complication free? Is anyone really completely complication free? From a surgical standpoint, I am sure. From a surgical standpoint - no complications. In and out of surgery - took 45 minutes. I was up and walking the "ward" later that afternoon. Had my drain removed prior to going home. Staples came out, just fine. My only two "complications" after surgery was INSOMNIA for about a month and I had a period for about a month and a half. The two latter "complications" were due to the fat cells being released back into my body - releasing my hormones back into the main stream. These both lasted just over a month (respectively) and then ---- heaven. No regrets. Had surgery 3 years ago (2/15/07). RNY. Laparoscopic. Great surgeon. Great NUT. Great medical group. Wouldn't change a thing.

I am a little over 3 years post RNY. I can honestly say that I had little to no pain since the surgery until now. I was in the hospital 2 days and when I went home I was up and around the same day. I have lost weight steadily, but since I didn't start exercising regularly until about a year later, I've only lost @115 lbs. I would like to lose 15-20 more. I have never experienced dumping, although I do eat sugar. I don't eat much sugar though. My capacity to eat is limited, but I can eat most foods. The strange thing is that I can no longer tolerate many of the bad foods. Sugar and greasy foods make me quesy. I was afraid of this surgery for several years, but I thank God that I had it. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

Complication free so far - sort of. I had the DS in May of '09. I was 428 lbs on the day of surgery and at 226 lbs now. I had pretty sever shoulder pain for a couple of weeks post-op but that's been it. I can eat virtually anything and can drink while I eat. I keep a very Atkins-like diet because I want to keep away from simple carbohydrates but I've been able to eat potatoes, corn, whole grain bread, beans, corn and flour tortillas in moderation as well as all meats and seafood. Best of luck on your journey!
