Question:
1 week post-op - pain swallowing pudding

I have been diligently sticking to mostly pure liquids but today decided to try some fat free/sugar free pudding. When I try to swallow it I get severe pain and it feels like something is stuck. It hurts for several minutes. Anyone else experience this and did I make a mistake having the surgery? Does anyone have regrets about having the surgery? I was fine until this pain today. It happened 2 times and both after eating the pudding. I am petrified to move into a different stage.    — suegee936 (posted on May 10, 2011)

It might be to thick for you being just 1 week out..try mixing in a little milk to thin it out a bit..my Dr made me wait 2 weeks PO to have anything but liquids..but after the pre op diet and the Post op diet you are ready to put anything in your mouth that isn't drinkable! Lol! Just remember to go slow and take small bites..easier said than done but the pain you are feeling is a reminder! Good luck and congrats on your surgery!! :D

I can't imagine eating anything other than liquids that early. I'm 1 yr and 4 months out and still rarely eat anything other than soup (too uncomfortable). The less you push yourself to eat, the less chance of stretching out your new stomach. I'm down 142 lbs and working out several times a week. I feel great ! At this point snacks for me are fruit or smart food popcorn (which is honestly my food of choice).. don't rush it.. it's your mind wanting to eat .. but if your tummy is telling you that you aren't hungry.. RESIST THE URGE ! Good luck- Karen

Well, here goes my two cents. YOU need to follow whatever your DR told you to eat. I must have the best surgeon in the world, because he gave me a book with every stage of food I should eat and a complete guide for vitamins, food, exercise, etc. I was not allowed to eat pudding a week out. I believe I was only on protein shakes. Recall, if you had RNY, you need to heal. Call your DR.

Pudding would be in the puree category. I was told to stick to liquids for 11 days post op.

Sorry, but it's just too soon. I promise you that it will be better later in the game. I agree with the person that said it is your mind wanting this and not your stomach. The mind is the hardest thing to change because it did not get to have the surgery. Your mind will slowly evolve into the new transition. Be patient, it's just part of the process.

Try calling your doctor are you taking your gas pills? They are a must. I been 1 year post don't give up. Attend support groups if they offer them. I have lost 147 lbs. I wear a size 10 from 26it's well worth it. Just follow the rules and stick to them.

I am 1 week out and had the same feeling and it was not with pudding but plain liquids, but I had swelling after my surgery and spent my week in the hospital because no liquids would go through.

I am 1 week post op too, and I get that same feeling Everytime I drink broth, cream of chicken soup, water, and I don't understand why, what gets me through, is thinking about the light at the end of the tunnel, losing weight!
