Question:
Going from lap-band to gastric bypass

Hey all, I've had the lap-band surgery and it did not work at all for me and i am now scheduled to have the gastric bypass in august. I heard that if you've had weight loss surgery prior then the success rate isn't as high especially if you've had lap-band. Is this true? Will i still lose all of the weight i want even if i've had lapband?? Right now i weigh 330lbs i want to be down to 140lbs and i'm 5'10", would i still lose ALL of the weight?    — Jords (posted on June 7, 2011)

Fallicy. With an rny you will lose weight. As with any wls, you will have stalls. I had an rny 22 months ago and still losing (I've lost 180 lbs). Mind you, it's really slow now but we can lose.

The difference is like night and day, because of the malabsorbsion feature. Restriction from the lapband is just not enough. You will eat less, and absorb less of what you do eat. You will have to work at eating enough to get in what you need. I am 3+ years out. I am short 5'2" I start at 220# my highest weight being 240#, My BMI was 40 at 220, After the first year I weighed around 140#, I thought that was it for me, but I continued to lose weight over time, hitting plateus here and there until around the second year, I dropped to 115#. That was a little low for me, I am 52 so I looked a little saggy there, so I worked at gaining up to around 119# where I have been stable over the last year. If I creep up a lb. or two, I just go back to basics and eat like right after surgery a day or two and I drop really fast. It's an awesome tool. Some people manage to "out-eat" it. But if you take care of it. It will take care of you! Good luck, and get ready to transform!!

Jords: I had rny in 12/09 and have been very successful; however; I just wanted to comment that in reading your post I got the impression that instead of focusing on the smaller goals it appears you are going gangbusters. Again, I don't know you and certainly do not wish to appear judgmental, but I encourage you to look at the whole picture versus the final "size" and/or weight you want to be. For instance I am 5'8.5" and now weigh 163.5#. An IDEAL weight (according to Wt. Watchers and Nutrisystem) for me would be 143 (as you posted you want to be). However, my surgeon told me if I were to lose 20 more lbs. I would look anorexic and that it is just not a feasible wt. for me to be b/c I am large-boned and also 1.5" shorter than even you are. Also, I lost more than the 75-80% he originally anticipated I would lose with a total WL of 130# in about 13-mos. The results have been amazing and life changing for me. Therefore, I whole-heartedly encourage you to go in it with an attitude to do the best you can and be pleased with whatever the results are and not to pre-define a number in your head that you think will be the only goal for you to look good. RNY (as another poster also said) is a completely different procedure and the results will be sure to astound you. God speed and best wishes. ~Trish (PA)
