Question:
A pain in the region just below sternum and above navel-

this pain occurs shortly after taking in my liquids (am 3 weeks post op tomorrow and still on liquid diet) ! I feel like vomitting and have heaved several times with a foamy-frothy type of content being brought up... my mouth always feels like I cannot get enough to drink to clear away that foamy-frothy like sensation... The pain eventually subsides, but I have limited my liquids due to the pain... it takes me forever to get things down and they do not feel like they want to stay down although I have yet to actually vomit. (minus the belching with the foamy-frothy stuff - ICK!!) ...... Any ideas???    — miss_di (posted on January 24, 2006)

Are you drinking really cold or hot liquids? I used to drink really cold water before surgery, and I just cannot do that now. You need to drink room-temp liquids. Just a thought. Good luck!

I can understand about the pain and the saliva. I had the same problem at three weeks to four weeks out (I'm 5 1/2 weeks now). The foamy saliva is common when your system is not liking the situation according to my support group and my surgeon. They did say if the pain continued and I was not able to get anything down for over a week it could be a stricture or some other problem. You should call your doctor and ask about the pain. I had a problem where it felt like I had to burp and there was air trapped but when I tried to burp foam came up. It started to go away after a week. I found I had less problems with either cold or hot drinks and more problems with room temp drinks. A lot of people have the reverse problem, they cant take hot or cold beverages. I also found using a straw to slow my drinking down to small sips helped too. I would also try sugar free icepops if the cold doesnt bother you, at least you could get some liquids. Good luck.

Boy do I understand you frustration. I had so much trouble I could only sip on gatorade for the first 3 weeks. It did get better. I had to switch to a different protein that was not too thick and stopped all milk products. I started using Nectar in water and that did the trick for me. Hang in htere and do check with your Dr about the pain. I had pain and they did a test. Learned I was just more sensitive than other patients. I thought I would burst but I didn't.

Is it really pain or just a sensation you aren't used to. I still have this sensation if I drink too quickly or too much. It is much better now, at seven weeks out but I can still FEEL the liquid in my pouch.......an odd feeling but not really pain. You need to sip the liquids.

I had the same problem. I still can't eat within and hour after drinking anything, or drink withoin and hour of eating. When I first had the surgery, my nutritionist told me to drink a certain amount, and I threw up if I tried to do it. I found that I had to just drink less and eventually I could get enough down, but only after several months. Listen to your body. I still have trouble getting all my liquids in, and I am a year out.
