Question:
What about Lap Band and Type 2 Diabetes?

I would like to hear from those that had Lap Band and how it adjusted their type 2 diabetes? Does it compeletly remove you from taking insulin and other meds or is that only with the Gastic Bypass??    — katann (posted on October 16, 2007)

I did not have my surgery yet but I can tell you what my surgeon and my nutritionist said and what i researched. I originally went in woth all the knowledge of the lap-band and was told that the gasrtic bypass was better for the dismissal of diabetes. the band will help you loose the weight and therfore you diabetes will improve drastically. alot of lap-band patients have seen wonderful resaults from the band. how long have you been diabetice and what meds do you take. I am now on insulin as well as oral meds. new studies show that during the gastric bypass, the area in the stomach that is bypasses is the area that is insulin resistant, therefore more people have a sooner relief from their diabetes. do all the research you can and do what is best for you! i wish you lots of luck. erica

I had type two diabetes and was taking a pill for it...I had the NON-adjust band and since then my blood sugar has been perfect...It certainly can help with your diabetes...how much depends on the severity of your diabetes but it will certainly help...I will you all the best and pray that you do wonderfully.

Just like the others have said, the gastric bypass will help you the best. Also, if you have been reading post's in here, alot of poeple have to get a revision to the gastric bypass b/c the band causes problems, medical problems and or health problems. You should always talk to your surgeon, but from what I understand and from my exp. most of them recomend the rny anyway.

It's weird - despite all the research stating the RNY is best for improving Type 2 diabetes, there are some in my support group who have had improvement in their blood sugars but still require insulin, and others who've had the Lap-Band and seen drastic improvement in their blood sugars. I would say it depends on individual body chemistry as well as gastric surgery, and that maybe you should take all things into consideration (as wel as your surgeon's recommendations) before deciding on a particular one.

When my endocrinologist first suggested weight loss surgery to put my diabetes into remission, I was so afraid to have my insides "re-routed" and asked about lapband. She said it was less of a guarantee than RNY which is the gold standard of weight loss. Therefore, I had RNY 11 months ago. The good news is that I loss all of my weight and am below goal, the bad news is that I still have to take meds for diabetes and my A1C is at 7 even though I have had no sugar for 11 months. I had a big sugar addiction and with RNY you can dump on sugar so I haven't had any and don't crave it anymore. With lapband you can't eat much but you can still have sugar and I knew that lapband wasn't restrictive enough. I have had no complications with RNY and highly recommend it. 99% of people do get off their diabetes meds including insulin...I have had type 2 diabetes for over 17 years and have a family history of it so most likely I will always have to control it with meds. Good luck to you!

I had rny. I misunderstood about the diabetes meds. I didn't take them for a year, then went to an endocrinologist. He said once you have diabetes, you always have it. You have to check your blood sugar. I am back on meds, even tho I eat healthy. My friend is not back on meds, but checks her sugar.

Check out the duodenal switch (DS). Better chance of getting rid of diabetes. Come to the DS forum here on OH or check out duodenal switch.com. A much better chance of keeping your weight off, better overall quality of life with no dumping, able to eat more normally. Just have to remember to take your supplements, drink water, eat protein and get lab work on a regular basis. You won't be sorry.
