Question:
I am a very picky eater, will I starve?

My husband thinks I won't be able to eat any of the foods I eat and will just eat them anyway and throw up. I've read other posts where post-ops regularly throw up and he said that is very unhealthy. I am not willing to try new foods. I eat very few fruits and veggies but I do eat some. I'm not big on sweets either. — Jennifer A. (posted on May 8, 2002)

I'm an EXTREMELY picky eater and trust me, I haven't starved yet!! You want to get the majority of your foods from protein so fruits and vegetables aren't as important as the protein is. I eat ALL of the same foods that I used to eat before the surgery, just not as much of them.

Not many people are pickier than me! Here's my veggie list: potatoes, corn, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms (if in something that is). I don't even like onions or peppers in my food, and generally pick them out when they're there. I like most fruits. I eat yogurt, cottage cheese, and sandwich meats/cheeses primarily. I'm 3 months post and have lost ~50 lbs. I get in my protein via either a shake or zero carb isopure each day, and I take 2 flintstones vitamins a day. When I do throw up, it's usually from either eating too fast or eating too much, not my food choices. Good luck!

I'm a picky eater too. Of course the foods that I used to eat...I would just eat a lot of it! I'm not a big fan of fruit except for strawberries. I only liked broccolli, some colifower (see, I can't even spell it!), corn and canned grean beans. After RNY, I began to crave things, that I never liked...things like cabbage, carrots, etc. Also, I should mention, that I didn't like meat. But since surgery, meat has become my passion! Veggies are still the same...fruits are still the same! Your tastes may change, but even if they don't and you are just as picky as you are now, you probably have nothing to worry about.
I should also emphasize that pre-op, I had bad, adverse reactions to artificial sweeteners (nutra sweet, sweet 'n low, twin--not splenda though). Since surgery, the problems that I used to have, have faded away and that has definately opened up my eating choices!
Also, there may be some people that do vomit all the time...I personally don't know anyone that vomits that much. I'm 7.5 months post-op and I haven't vomited in months! Other friends maybe vomit once a month, but that's usually assosciated with eating things too fast, or eating things they know they shouldn't eat. Don't let a myth like this scare you! You'll do great...good luck~
