Question:
Why does my heart rate increase when I eat?

Does anyone else experience this? Anytime I eat, my heart rate increases. I feel as though I've just "stoked the little fire inside me". It only lasts a few minutes after I'm done eating, and then returns to normal. But it's weird. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks much!    — Patricia G. (posted on June 25, 2003)

Hmmmm... Pat, are you eating a great deal of salt? That could cause it. Also, sugar can cause this also. Watch those carbs/veggie/fruits for sugars!! What are you eating? That will help me help you more! :~)

Patricia, I am 2 months post-op and shortly after I eat my heart races too. The other day I had 26 beats in 15 seconds, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I asked my surgeon and he told me that my carbs and sugars were to high. I cut back on the carbs and the sugar and it still beats at a high pace. The only difference between us is that when this happens I have to lay down for about 30 minutes. If you should find the answer please email me at [email protected]

I had this problem early on. My nutritionist thinks that it has to do with my blood sugar. I am not diabetic. But she says that even if we dont dump on sugar after this surgery that our bodies still process the sugars differently and can have reactions to it.

this happens every time you eat - no matter WHAT you eat?

It could also be the fact that when you eat, your heart has to work harder to get all the food through. I have noticed that in myself as well on ocassion. I feel my heart pumping harder and I get all flushed afterwords like I did just work out. That usually happens though when I am eating a large meal or much more than I should at least. I am a carbo junkie so that could be the reason.
