Question:
Is PMS any easier after WLS?

LADIES!! I was just curious if PMS cramps lightened up or got worse after WLS. I get pretty icky first few days, and my body is planning to present it's self the on surgery date, I hear people say the surgery helps bring it on, but sure it doesn't help to know its coming . I think I will have enough to take care of without Aunt Flow in town for a week(sorry)..    — pateblkbrn (posted on September 24, 2003)

Hi there. My period showed up about 4 days after surgery. It wasn't as noticeable as it had been before surgery b/c I was to busy trying to deal with getting in fluids and exercising (walking mostly). My stomach was aching from surgery and I had cramps but in all it wasn't as bad. However, once I healed up pretty well and started getting my period regularly (for the most part) the cramps at times have been at times unbearable. I can say strangely enough that walking continues to help me with the cramps as well. I know that there are times when I just don't feel like walking but I know that afterwards I feel so much better. Hope this helps.

My period was not scheduled, but came immediately post-op like the nurses said was likely to happen. And, sorry, but post-op, my periods have been more painful. I used to not get cramps at all, but now it's really painful. Not heavier, but definitely more painful. I'm interested to see what other post-ops have to say! Good luck! I started my period right on schedule, two days after surgery. It wasn't bad at all, in terms of cramps or heaviness. My experience is that my cramps/PMS has been MUCH LESS since wls. Of course, I am exercising regularly and that might be a contributing factor, I don't know. But, there is definitely a lessening of the cramps. Good luck to you!

Before I had wls my cramps were unbearable. I would take anything just to knock me out. I would bleed extremely heavy for 7-8 days and hurt for 3 days before till I stopped bleeding. Now I hurt for 1 day and bleed med. flow for only 3 days at the most. So in my experience my period has gotten so much better.

My periods have become very unregular after WLS. Since WLS I have been having a period once every two months. I get cramps EVERY month though and they are BAAAAADDDDDDD! I have never had cramps this bad ever!! I am hoping that once I get to goal, my body will get back on track and I will begin having regular periods without bad cramps. I can hope huh??? LOL!!!

With PMS, I get easily irritated especially at work. During, my cramps are lighter and so is the flow.

PMS wasn't worse in terms of mood, etc, but pain level is worse, and the flow is heavier.

Before surgery, you could set your watch by my periods. I knew almost down to the hour when it would start. Little to no PMS. Post-op my periods are wacky, starting about every 2 weeks for 2 days or so and I'm a pit bull off the chain when it starts. Never been like this before and I (and my BF!) dont like it one bit. With it being so messed up I KNOW my birth control pills are not working so I use other methods too. Dang near impossible to get in to see the gyno so I have to wait until my yearly in december to find out if there is something I can do for this. Good luck to you. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 115+ and counting

I have PCOS, and did not have a period for almost 10 years before the surgery. The have come back though..5 months out down 90 pounds. I didnt even know what is was like to have PMS since I had never had it before, but let me tell you...now about 2 weeks before it stars, I have to get a prescription for xanax to calm me down. Hopefully when my weight stabalizes this will stop. Its horrible. No cramps, just anxiety from HELL!!!
