Question:
carbonated drinks again?

I've never been a big soda drinker but every now and then I'd enjoy one. I know that carbonated drinks enlarge our pouch but I just wanted to know has anyone out there drank a soda lately?    — Treva C. (posted on May 24, 2002)

I have part of a can of soda 3 or 4 times a month. Not even once a week. I usually have Diet Snapple, Crystal Lite or water, but every once in a while a soda sounds good so I'll have some. I never drink a whole can and usually sip a little over an hour or so. I am 21 months post-op and don't feel like I am hurting anything by having an occasional soda. There will be those that don't agree and say you should never let it pass your lips, but I'm not into depriving myself of anything.

I don't drink sodas anymore because the carbonation makes my pouch feel too full. But every once in a while I just have to have a little. I usually take a sip of my husband's drink or open a can and pour a little bit over lots of ice. If you wait about 10 minutes and swirl it around pretty good a lot of the carbonation goes out of it. I still never drink more than a couple ounces, but it doesn't make me feel uncomfortable if I defizz it first. =)

I drink diet pepsi every day-when I was a couple months post op I would take a small sip and the gas would bother my pouch but after about 3 months I had no problems drinking soda at all.I was always a big Coke and Pepsi drinker, so my biggest thing was switching to diet soda, but it has been fine. I drink a few cans every day but make sure to drink between 64-128oz of water a day, because caffiene is a diuretic. I know you hear you are not supposed to drink carbonated drinks, but everyone is different. I am 7.5 months post op, down over 135lbs with 57 to go to goal, so I don't think it has impacted my losing any. I also eat the right amount of protein and exercise so that helps too!

Pre-op I used to drink about a 2 liter of diet coke per day. I was very concerned that I would not be able to adjust to life without soda. I had no problem at all!! I didnt really want anything for the first month. And when I finally got around to trying soda, it didnt make me feel good. All gassy and stuff, it hurt. Now I have about 3 or 4 ounces every two or three weeks. I just dont want it like i used to.

At my 3 month checkup I asked if I could have some diet pop and my doctor said I could have up to 4 ounces at a time or I had to let it go flat. He said it could cause pain if I drank more but it would not stretch my pouch because it is just a momentary expansion and it takes consistant pressure of food to stretch the pouch.

I cannot do carbonated drinks nearly as often as I did pre-op. Guess you could say my heart's just not in it anymore, but I do occasionally have a soda (about 12 oz.). Of course I'm 14.5 months post-op, and I can tolerate most things now.

I am 15 months post-op and only tried a diet soda once. It was about 11 months post and it really tasted great going down, but I was doubled over within an hour with extreme gas pain from the carbonation. I'm sure this doesn't happen to everyone, but it sure made a believer out of me. I haven't tried it since and won't drink soda again after that experience.

i am 16 mo post opp and i've been drinking one coke a day for the pass several months.i can drink it but i have to sip on it a long time.i was a big coke drinker before my surgery.i am also worried about my snacking.i can pretty much eat anything now.just in small amounts.i pray i don't gain my weight back. for i've lost 145 pounds.but i can't seem to loose anymore and i have always been able to eat sweets. that is my weakness.i wish i couldn't.i sometimes feel this surgery has failed me in this way.if i couldn't eat sweets i think i could continue loosing.it is so hard to get back on track now.
