Question:
How much of small bowel is usually bypassed?

I know that varies according to surgeon and procedure but I have seen 100 cm mentioned frequently. I am having an open RNY on 12/31 (great way to start New Year). My surgeon said he bypasses 150 cm.    — sandy L. (posted on December 19, 2002)

My surgeon said about 5 feet is bypassed. I can't do the conversion to cm. too well. I think it is pretty close. Distal is about 15 feet. Good Luck!

150 cm works out to 4.92126 Feet - My surgeon typically bypasses 140 cm (4.593176 Feet).

Proximal is between 100 cm and just below 150. 150 and over (200 is the highest I have seen) is considered distal and usually used for those with alot to lose. The more bypassed, the more malabsorbtion and the harder you have to work post-op on nutrition and vitamins. All docs bypass different amounts-its what they are comfortable with and what they think will work for their patients. Mine does 110 cm. Docs also vary on the pouch size. Ask your doc how large he is making your pouch. I have heard of from 1 oz to 6 oz.
