Will having a pnemonia shot proir to surgery help?

a pnemonia shot is usally good for 10 years, will this help in any way with not getting pnemonia after surgery due to fuild build up in the lungs?    — [Anonymous] (posted on December 31, 2001)

The pneumonis shot that is given is for bacterial pneumonia. There is viral pneumonia and pneumonia cause by fluid in the lungs from anesthesia. It can't hurt you to have the shot. I make sure I have one every 10 years. However, I am not a physcian but I do not believe it will safe guard you from pneumonia that some people acquire after surgery from anesthesia. Just a "layman's" opinion.
