Question:
Is it ok to take the One-A-Day Weight Smart Vitamin?

Has any one tried the One A Day Weight Smart Multi Vitamin? It is Ephedra Free, but does contain some caffine. I have tried one of these and know that the caffine amount cannot be that high, because caffine gives me the jitters and headaches and I did not have either. And if they are ok to take has any one been taking them and do they work?    — Marcy S. (posted on May 14, 2003)

If it is not a chewable, it won't work. I was told our new stomach don't digest vitamins properly in pill form. They must be chewable or sublingual

Wow, that's news to me. My surgeon hasn't said anything to me about it. In fact, I showed him my vitamins to get his approval and he said they were fine. (I take a multi-vitamin and a B12 vitamin daily...both in a pill form)

Have your levels checked before you try them and afterwards. I do GNC Women's Ultra Mega vites and my labs are good. But I suspect One a Day would work as well. We're all different depending on our malabsorption. Good luck and God Bless!

After I finished my childrens' multivitamins (as a fresh post-op), I switched to one of the One-A-Day's. I switched back to an adult chewable multivitamin (Centrum) after I saw a threat on the Yahoo OSSG grad board where someone discovered she was passing her multivitamin, intact, out the other end. That person was also having problems with her labs. I haven't had a problem with labs, but given the coating on these multivitamins, I'm not so sure whether they break down in our systems so well. Who knows. Just passing along the info for what it's worth!

I DO take the One-A-Day Weight Smart vitamins. I am 1-year post-op and haven't had any problem with swallowing them, etc.

I am 15 months out. I take One A Day pill form. No problems with my labs. The only problem I have had is with B12 and I switched to shots and now ok. Actually my labs are great now. Check with your doctor. (RNY open distal, 2/02, -163)

Hello Marcy. I do take a One-A-Day but not the Weight Smart. As for these vitamins not absorbing, I was told that if you place your vitamin in a glass of water and it breaks down within 30 mins. that you will absorb the vitamin. As for the caffeine in the Weight Smart, I believe caffeine can reduce the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals into your system, calcium in particular. I stay away from all caffeine because I need all the help I can get in absorbing my vitamins. Hope this helped. Lap RNY 3/31/03 309/263/156
