Question:
I'm in some pain and the lortab/hydrocodone i was prescribed is no longer effective

I was given Lortab elixir in the hospital, which seemed to work very well. My doctor's assistant discussed with me continuing the elixir, yet proceeded to write a prescription for the generic (uncoated and hard-to-swallow horse pills). At first i was worried about being able to swallow the pill, but after realizing i could swallow them, noticed that the prescribed dose of one tab per four to six wasn't working AT ALL for me. After contacting my surgeon's office to confirm two pills were okay, i took THAT prescribed dosage, which worked for one day. Now it's Sunday, I only have 2 dosages left, and even when i take two pills at the same time, i am left with quite a bit of pain (more so than during the last day of the hospital). I thought the pain level was supposed to keep getting progressively less and less? My incision is killing me, i practically can do nothing because of the pain, and i was crying last night in the shower because the shampoo-water was stinging my incision. I couldn't even dry myself properly because of the pain! I don't know if i should just tough it out for the next 24 hours and wait to call the doctor's office or have him paged. Can i get a little advice from those who can relate? Thanks for all the help and support thus far! (OPEN RNY 7/7/03, 6 DAYS POST-OP, -9.2 LBS.)    — sweetmana (posted on July 13, 2003)

If you are in that much pain you should call the doctor. It might be nothing, but I would want to be on the safe side. I had open RNY and never took a single dose of pain medicine after leaving the hospital.

I am 12 days post op & my pain just got better 3 days ago. Mostly on my lower left side. Especially when I overdid it or tried to sleep in my bed (had to use the recliner). One day I even made my husband check it out just to make sure everything looked ok. My surgeon sent me home with liquid Lortab (yuck!..but it works) & a bottle of children's Motrin. Sometimes I had to use them both. Hope this helps. Also might want to check your temp & make sure there's no infection.

Call your doctor! You shouldn't be in pain, discomfort - yes, pain - no. Hope you feel better.

Hi, original poster here! thanks for the responses. the pain hasn't been as bad today as it was yesterday, and i think i may have overdone it. i will be calling the doc's office tomorrow and insisting on either a) the lortab elixir or b) a new medication. Thanks for the support!
