Question:
How much sugar are you allowed during a meal. Is it okay if it has 4 or 5 grams.

Practically everything has a few grams of sugar. Are a few okay or is it just an individual thing? I'll be having the RNY distal.    — hannah R. (posted on September 5, 1999)

It so depends on your goal. If your goal is to get as much sugar as you can tolerate without getting sick, trial and error it. If your goal is to get as much weight off as possible and learn to use mild self-discipline that works (vs dieting, which never did), stick to 6g per serving. I'm moments away from my 5th anniversary of surgery and haven't since that day. I still shoot for under 6g of sugar per meal.

Hi Hannah: I had an open RNY distal with a 1cc micro pouch, 16 mo. ago. I can only tolerate 2-3 gms of sugar at a time. There are so many products on the market that are made with nutrasweet that you really won't hardly miss the sugar. It is hard at first to get used to reading every label, watch out for the fat-free too, it usually has more sugar in it to make up for the low fat taste. Everyone has they're own tolerances, I found that I do best on 2 gms and I feel like I push it with 3gms. It just isn't worth it to me to push it. Sweets were my downfall they were what got me so fat to begin with, so I try to do without as much as I can. You are right though, almost everything has sugar in it- it is challenging, to say the least. Good Luck!! Jan Terry
