Question:
When you discontinued CPAP did you have calibration studies?

Hello all! This is my first post, so let me just say that I love this site and all the people here. There is truly a wealth of information and compassion here. My question: In reading the data base, I saw a number of posts about discontinuing CPAP after WLS. For those of you who were able to discontinue CPAP, I am wondering if you had another calibration study, or if your PCP perscribed a lower calibration level, or if you went off by yourself? Thanks much.    — Diane S. (posted on March 22, 2000)

Yes. All of the above. First the doc had it recalibrated to half (from 15 to 7.5). Then he sent me for a new study (I was about 9 months out). Then my husband had surgery, too, and needed his machine recal immediately. 10 to 5. So, then I tried his at 5, while he tried mine at 7.5. Haahaha! Then, I had to take his away because he was blowing out through his mouth at night and into my EARS. He was done in 60 days, no study. I messed around with mine until HE took it away. I think I was afraid to let it go, even though I was down to 110 # and the apnea was gone, gone, gone. Then, I let it run on the nightstand for white noise!

On Jan 18th my PCP ordered a new sleep study to make sure I could go off it... Jan 25th the test confirmed what I already knew.. Yes, I stopped it on my own prior to the retest. C-Pap machine was returned to vendor Feb 3, 2000. ;-)

Michelle curran- I can relate to the white noise you mentioned! I quit on my own after my husband advised me I didn't need it any more. Not the most medical way to do it, but more reliable and cheaper than another sleep study as he was the one to tell me I needed it in the first place! I too, used if for the back ground noise for about a week before I called the rental place to have them pick it up. Good Luck!
