Question:
I had severe stomach pain yesterday and ended up calling an ambulance to

take me to the emergency in the hospital. The pain would be extremely bad then ease up a bit, this went on all day till I went to the hospital. They did blood work & exrays but they all came back negative except for a very slight enzyme rise, something to do with the pancreas. I also had dry heaves, cold sweat and was very clammy at times. I had RNY distal about 5 months ago and have had no problems at all until now. The day before I had popcorn for the first time but after 24 hours they didn't think that would cause the pain. Any response on this would be appreciated.    — hannah R. (posted on April 7, 2000)

Have you discussed this with your surgeon yet? Without knowing more details as to what else you might have had to drink or eat, it's really hard to say what it is. But it almost sounds like a severe case of dumping which is sometimes caused by high fat foods or sugar especially in a distal. If the pain was so severe you had to be ambulanced to the hospital, I would get on the phone with my surgeon ASAP and discuss everything with him/her. Best wishes, I hope all is okay!

Sounds like you had pacreatitus, I have had this before where the pain is so bad it takes your breath away. This happens when you don't have a Gall Bladder and you are still forming stones and they get stuck in the liver and pancreas.

I've had Chronic Pancreatitis for the past 3 years. I go to the ER monthly with severe pain, nausea, dry heaves. Did they check your blood sugar? My pancreatis is caused from high triglycerides which is from carbo metabolism. As in popcorn!! Pancreatitis can be deadly. Please have your Dr. check your Blood Sugar, Lipase, Amylase and Tryglycerides. Most Doctors think pancreatitis is either from Gall Stones, Trauma, or Alcohol consumption. But it can be from sugar and carbohydrate metabolism also. I get severe upper abdominal pain when my triglycerides elevate over 900. 150 is normal, and mine have gone as high as 6000. Good Luck and please let me know how you are doing.

If you had your gallbladder out too with your surgery I have been told you are to stay away from nuts and popcorn.

I developed pancreatitis right after my WLS. I was in the hospital for 10 days. I had to go off all foods and be fed by TPN.
