What brands of protein shakes are the best for both pre and post-op?

I was wondering what specific brands of shakes everyone was using,I would like to start before I have the surgery if I can.Thank you!    — Julie V. (posted on April 19, 2001)

Hi Julie - I am also pre-op...and decided to try a few...what I settled on was Carb-Solutions...to me it has the best taste...though I prefer the powder vs the pre-mixed. I think the pre-mix tastes too sweet. The powder comes in chocolate and vanilla...I put it in the blender, add a banana, crushed ice and water....It has about 20 grams protein and only 2 grams of sugar. And it is conveniently located at most grocery stores....From what I have read in the Q & A here....there are several kinds that everyone recommends...give a few a try! Good Luck, Karan

If you're tired of the sweet flavored shakes, there's one called TwinLab Vege Fuel. It's soy protein, and takes the flavor of whatever you put it in. I've used it in oatmeal, and mashed potatoes. Not bad. Also, if you want a crunchy snack post op, try Soy Nuts. They come either salted, like peanuts, or Ranch and Barbeque flavored. Careful with all of these if you are soy sensitive. For the ladies, it's very good at warding off hot flashes due to hormone changes.

Hi there. I am 8 weeks post op and I tried the "Soy" protein shakes and I just can't handle the film it leaves in my mouth. I did find the Dr. Adkins protein shakes and I use skim milk with mine and they are sooooo good. I add fresh strawberries to my vanilla and it tastes like a real milk shake, but not too thick. It has about 26 grams of protein and tons of other vitamns. Good Luck!!!
