I found that sleeping on my back with a pillow under my knees was the most comfortable for me. I am normally a tummy-to-side sleeper and I had a horrible time until I learned to sleep on my back!

Many people buy or use recliners. I found I did best on couches the first several weeks. The bed was too flat and hard to get out of. I also propped pillows under my knees. You definitely won't be sleeping on your stomach, but you're lucky that you're not in the habit.

I had open RNY on June 4, 2002 and found sleeping no problem while in the hospital. Just too plain tired the first couple day. Being a side sleep for the most part I was worried about how well I would sleep both in the hospital and after coming home. An additional worry was how I would get in and out of bed. To my surprise, the nurses at the hosptial helped me overcome any possible problems. In the Critical Care Unit the second day after the surgery, they fitted me with a "binder". It was a big elastic band, or should I say two of them safety pinned together to fit me. When they put it on, it gave the needed support of the abdomen for me to move around in bed and even turn onto my side. The binder was also a great help in getting up and out of bed. In the hospital they have the bed elevated a bit so there was not much of a problem. At home though I could not have gotten out of bed with the help of the "binder". I wore it constantly at home for about a week. Then I took it off for a few hours at a time. Within another week I was weaned from it and have had no problems with my sleep since.
