Question:
I met with my surgeon today and he told me my goal weight should be 175 pounds.

I am 5'11" and wondering if anyone else that is this height has reached goal and what 175 looks like. I keep thinking 175 would still be too much.    — Jeannie4 (posted on March 18, 2003)

Jeannie, Hi there, I'm pretty tall close to where you're at, minus an inch I stand at 5"10, starting weight of 303 pounds, I'm 10 months out and am down to 175-177 pounds. My original goal was 175 pounds, but I've since changed that to 160 I went from a pants size 28-30 to a size 13-14 in pants, my shirts have gone from a 28 to a size 18, I'm still somewhat big in the chest region... as I carried most of my weight in the tummy and back, (and had a little boob). Preop 48c post op 10 months 36c, and shrinking.... Allot of people tell me that I shouldn't loose anymore weight and that I look skinny, how-ever my weight has settleled in around the mid section, (Tummy) and that's what I'm working on. I find myself having a bigger bone structure so I probably will never see a size 10 pants, and that's just due to hip bone ratio. One thing you might want to consider is that I belive the bone structure has something to do with your goal weight, and that I believe in some-way or another you winde up shrinking, somehow I lost an inch off of my height. I'm now 5"9 1/2 somewhere in there. I think I read somewhere that with weight loss you tend to shrink due to the excess padding on the back or spine ? , I know I've read it somewhere, hopefully other's will post as well regarding it. I've also gone from a size 11w shoes to a size 10w or 11 regular.. I'm loving that as smaller shoes have so many options. Hope I've been some help to you. DO like me, set one and then when you reach it, see how it fits on you, and at that time change it if you don't like it, If I was at a point that 175-177 would be my ending weight and that I wouldn't loose anymore, I'm happy here..... You'll find a happy medium. God Bless, Post op 10 months down 127 pounds about 17 pounds to goal

Hi, Jeannie/ I am only 5'6" tall and the Dr. set my goal at 154. I thougt that was too much also, but when I got there I was surprised. I am at 148 lbs at 5'6" and I am a size 8. I think you will be surprised also at what size you will be at that weight. Just wait and see what you stabilize at, and that will usually be a good size for you. I wish you the best/ Patti Meadows e-mail: [email protected]

When you get to 175 you'll probably look like you used to at 150. Remember, after being obese for many years, we have heavier skeletons from the dense bones we've acquired from hauling all that weight around for years, so some of your total weight is from those heavier bones. I'm living proof of that; at 170 I look like I did at 140. Honest!

Hi Jeannie, We are almost the same height. I am 5'10.5" tall and my start weight was 326#. My doctor gave me a goal weight of 149#. I laughed so hard in his face he thought I was crazy. I told him that I would never be that weight and told him for my height I should weigh 160#. Well, I am one to tell you that this surgery has no idea of your height or bone structure and it will take you where it will. I am currently 145#. So, I guess the joke is on me so to speak...lol. I am in a size 6. Most people (especially my hubby) say I am too thin. But this is where I ended. I lost 171# in 10 months and got sick in June of 2002 and lost another 10#. So, I wish you well on your weight loss journey. margaret@goal

I am 5'9 and currently 185-190#. BUT, I am wearing size large shirts(14), and 10-14 in pants & dresses depending on the brand & style, but generally very comfortably in a size 12! My surgeon had also set a goal weight for me of 170#. As you can see, I still have a ways to go to ever achieve that. I think that because I am diligent about working out (aerobic & weight training) I must be changing my body shape. My point is, the number on the scale is only a small part of the total picture...you may also want to consisder your body fat %, your clothing size, & body measurements. Best wishes in your process!

Hi, Just wanted to add my two cents. I am 5'8.5 and my start weight was 314. My nutritionist and physician penned my goal weight to 166. I think I will be happy at 175-180. I am 3 months post op and down 54 lbs. I cant wait to see what the next few more months will hold.

I think of goal weights like the Supreme Court thinks of pornography. "I can't define it, but I'll know it when I see it." Don't worry about the number. Even people who are the same height can look vastly different at the same weight. When you get to 175, you may look and feel faboulous, or you may still want to loose a few more pounds. As long as your BMI is in the "normal" range you'll be healthy.

Hi fellow Minnesotan! I am 5' 11" also, and right now I weigh 245. People are starting to call me "skinny", which I think is weird. I would like to weigh 190, and I think I would look pretty thin then. I have a large frame though too, so it might be different for me, I don't know. But I think that if I weighed 175 I would be too thin.
