Question:
My Pre-op Protein (albumin) levels are low, and I want to know why?

Has anyone else had this problem? We're you able to have surgery anyway? I am 42 and have had Rheumatoid Arthritis for 11 years. I have had low protein levels ever since. I believe this is probably related to my RA, but the surgeon has never heard of it. I am going to have some more blood work done, but I worry that this will keep me from having WLS. Does anyone here know about this. Any information is greatly appreciated. Carolyn    — Carolyn J. (posted on January 30, 2000)

Hi Caroline, well I am 6 wks post op and find it very very hard to get in proteins and with out the protein my hair falls out and im a bit weaker than normal and when loosing weight i will lose muscle... not fat your body wants to store the fat... you need protein and as a post op protein becomes one of the most important things you will need if your low, now i would try to boost up that level somehow because even if the surgen gives the ok, it is dangerous to have low protein to start than trust me you will struggle trying to get enough after....hope this helps

Hello this is really not an answer to your question but a suggestion. I also have RA and I thought after surgery I would feel much better having some of the weight off. I am about 5 months post from a open ryn. Remember no more anti inflammatory drugs, try and get off of them before surgery and see how you feel. It has been alittle rough on me with different drugs. Vioxx can still be taken but thats about it. Good Luck to you tina
