Radical Thyroid surgery, no thyroid only synthetic

I had thyroid cancer and had all thyroid removed except two para thyroids. question is, will my body get the amount of thyroid needed if I have surgery    — Shannon S. (posted on March 27, 2001)

I have had thyroid cancer 22 years ago, with follow-up radioactive iodine. Iv been on synthroid since then. I had open bypass 9 months ago, and have lost 115 pounds. I have had to reduce the amount of synthroid I take. As you lose weight your body don't need as much. My doctor has gotten my thyroid at the numbers he wants now and its stable. So to answer your question, yes your body does get the medication that it needs. Huggs Margaret
