Question:
I need to find a doctor with a low self-pay price

It's been a while since I've posted. Last time I was here I was attemping for the third time to get insurance approval, and failed. I proceeded to drop out of college and get a job in order to try to finance it myself. Things have come and went, and it's been hard to save with me needing a new(er) vehicle and all, so I'm stuck with just my paychecks, and a couple of credit cards, instead of the several thousands of dollars I need for the surgery. I have been talking with a Dr. who contacted me through this site, and he has talked to a loan company who may give me as much as $10,000.00 for surgery. Even if I get the full amount (I have a young credit history so maybe not) that still leaves me $9,000.00 short of the amount I need. While I can raise some money personally by selling my vehicle and a couple of personal items (Nolan Ryan autographed baseball should bring in 100 etc), I still would find myself at least 4 thousand short. My question is if anyone knows of any other doctor's I can get in contact with that would have a lesser cash price than $19,000.00. Surely the loan company would still finance it for another dr. (hopefully), and I wouldn't have to come up with as much, and would stand a much better chance at the surgery. Please only list dr's on the east coast, as I can't travel cross country. West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Souther Carolina, Tennessee, New York, Maryland, Washington DC, Pennsylvania would be ideal places, but for a good enough price I'd be willing to expand further. As always any help would be greatly appreciated, because I'm not sure where to start on the topic or where to go. Joshua    — joshbowski (posted on December 18, 2001)

HI, I am researching doctors currantly and saw that Dr. Callery in southern CA charges about $13,000 for the entire surgery (I believe it includes everything). I haven't talked with his office as of yet, but if you read all of his patients comments in the surgeon section you'll see that they have great things to say. I saw on your profile that you are located on the other coast so you would have to travel. (I believe Dr. Callery is located in Poway CA)

Try the appendix of Michelle Boasten's book, WeightLoss Surgery: Understanding and Overcoming Morbid Obesity- Life Before, During and After Surgery. I would just give you the info. but I just mailed my copy back to its owner. Good luck!

Me again, I missed the part where you said you can't travel across country. Sorry. I have been reading all the info on the doctors in my area that their patients wrote. You can find a lot of info that way. And if you see another self pay e-mail them and ask how much it cost. I think most people are helpful and will tell you. Good luck on your search!

My surgeon, Dr. Barry Haicken in Largo/Clearwater, FL has for insurance costs to be 20,000 flat. The self-pays that I've heard of have had to pay appx 15,000. Good Luck.

In my opinion... this is not a procedure where you want to shop for the lowest price. Get a bargain on a sweater, not a surgeon. How about finding a job with insurance. Just a thought.

Have you tried to get another insurance company?

Remember, with most surgeries you pay for the doctor and hospitalizaton seperately. Perhaps you couldpay for the dr. upfront and have a payment plan for the remainder? (mine uphere in Bufflo charges about $5500 upfront for the surgery and aftercare...then the hospital/anesthesiologist is seperate.
