Question:
Can you provide recommendations for A, D & E supplements?

It has been approximately five months since my laproscopic gastric bypass procedure and I have been recently diagnosed as having vitamin A, D and E deficiency, or at least low levels in my last blood work. I have been to numerous drug stores and vitamin shops and have been unable to find a supplement with sufficiently high doses to add to my regiment. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have regarding appropriate supplements. Also, I have been feeling very tired lately and would like to know from those that have been similarly diagnosed with these vitamin deficiencies if they have felt the same and whether the supplements were effective in returning energy levels back to normal.    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on October 11, 2004)

The things we usually need to supplement are protein, iron, calcium, A, D, E, zinc, B12 and maybe B1 (but the 2 multis usually cover it). The form you need is dry form A, D & E. A should be retinol (IMHO), because there is no guarantee that (in our bodies) it will convert to retinol. D would be D3. E would be the d-alpha tocopheryl. Those are the best absorbed form, as long as it's delivered dry (not in oil). Did you collect copies of all your labs from pre-op til today? We usually aim to meet or beat those pre-op levels.

I purchase my dry Vitamin A&D, dry Vitamin E from vitalady.com. I have a vitamin A deficiency as well and will be testing again in late November to see how I am doing with turning that around. I have had to go to two of the dry A&D capsules daily until my next labs because I was taking one when I got the deficiency lab. Sandra

I had a BPD/DS 3.5 yrs. ago. I take ADEK's from Scandipharm. I take 1 tablet 3x a day. I take the chewable form. There's also liquid. My labs are great. I dont absorb fat so I need to add this supplement. It also has zinc in it. I order them from the pharmacy as while you don't need a prescription they are behind the counter. I get them cheaper from Sam's club and Costco over the drug store. I save over $9 a bottle. Check with your Dr. or nutritionist.
