Question:
Can you eat watermelon?

I am 3 wks post-op today. I had open RNY and have started on pureed foods. Can I eat watermelon as long as I don't swallow any seeds? Also, can I have a poached egg?    — rosemary I. (posted on May 19, 2000)

Yes, to the eggs. Soft eggs and scrambled eggs seem to be easy to tolerate. The protein in them is good also. Probably with the watermelon but personally I would save my space for more protein. The water in the watermelon may break up the monotony of the day though. You know how much you can handle and the watermelon will not hurt your pouch. Just be careful and go slow.....can never go too slow at 3 weeks post op. I am 4 months out and 67 pounds down and I still have to watch every bite that goes in.

I would watch the watermelon.. It has a very high sugar content. I'm not sure if it would affect the dumping thing, but it might impact your weight loss... Check with your nutritionist to be sure....

My nutritionist said to stay away from watermelon, as well as other melons, for 8 weeks post op. Also keep in mind that they have a lot of water in them - don't get too full.

its strange because I was not really a fruit eater before, now I crave it, I am 30 days post op and watermelon has been a god send to me, I love it and it goes down very well, I usually have it for breakfast with no problem... Apple slices are hard to digest I do not recommend apples..Good luck!

I can eat watermelon (7 mo past), but I tend to eat too much - gives me a massive stomach ache, and I wind up having to lay down for a few hours. No diarrhea though -

I eat watermelon all the time. When I was eating only pureed food I would put seeded pieces in the food processor and then I would drink the juice. Once I was eating anything - 1 month out - I would eat whole pieces. I usually have my watermelon after I come home from my walk on the local walking trail. Very refreshing!
