Question:
Has anyone heard anything about taking Pre-natal vitamins?

A friend of mine who also had WLS wanted me to ask if anyone has taken or heard of taking pre-natal vitamins for a supplement for those of us who have had WLS. I haven't heard anything of it. Please let me know if you have and what you think about this. Thanks.    — Andrea H. (posted on February 18, 2001)

My surgen, Dr. Gagner, Mt. Sinai, NY, prescribes a prenatal iron supplement for all BPD/DS patients. I'm able to keep my iron normal with one nifre forte. Some patients take two to keep their levels up.

My PCP put me on natachew which is a chewable prenatal vitamin. I am 7 months post op and have been taking them since about 2 months post-op.

My surgeon, Dr. Alverdy @ University of Chicago prescribes pre-natal vitamins for all his RNY patients. I believe they are called StuartNatal Plus. I assume the Plus is iron, although I forgot to ask. I was told I'll have to take them for life, along with B-12 tablets (500 mcg.) and Citrical + D.

Check the iron in the supplement. If it is ferrous SULFATE, that is not the one to use for us. If it has no iron or an acceptable iron, it might make a nice base for RNY, but we need 1500mg (min.) cacium citrate + D + magnesium, and some other things, as well, to cover our particular needs.
