Question:
Where does it hurt??

After the surgery, what is the most pain from, your insides being switched around or the incision on the outside?? Also, after you lose your weight, what do you do with your excess skin until you have your pannie or whatever you have done?? Do we need to wear a girdle or will that even help?? Please help as I know I'm not the only one with this question.    — Juanita B. (posted on April 9, 2001)

I had open rny, and the mpst pain I had was in the first two days. I had terrible stomach spasms and pain from where they used the spreaders on my ribs. That didn't subside completely until about two weeks post op. There must be major bruising on the ribs. It's much better now, and the time has really flown by. Be careful using the girdle they provide. It almost makes you feel less able to breath. It does help with the belly support though.

Juanita, I've had 2 WLS (VBG in 97 and RNY last year). With VBG I had very poor pain control and was in a lot of pain (I think there may have been a problem with the morphine pump since I didn't have this problem with the RNY). I don't remember any pain from the incision with either surgery. The pain was deeper in the area of the stomach with the VBG. It was truly awful the first two days but after that it got better on a daily basis. Then of course the muscles are very sore for several weeks afterwards. Kind of like doing 1,000 situps sore. With the RNY I didn't experience much post-op pain from the stomach but had the sore muscles but once I got home and off of pain meds (the meds they gave me to take at home made me deathly sick so I quit taking them) I had weeks of pain on the right side waist level (where my intestines were rearranged I guess) and of course, the same muscle soreness as before. The memory of the pain does fade with time (just like in childbirth) and as in childbirth, the pain is worth the results..... weight loss. Hope this helps. I would do this a 3rd time if I had to and the knowledge of the pain wouldn't stop me.

I am post-op wls, but pre-op transgender (still on hormones), and yes, I wear a girdle. But I'd be wearing one anyway just because. Wink.
