Question:
Does anyone get dry heaves in the morning upon waking up?

I am 3 weeks post op and for the last 3 days when I wake up in the morning I have dry heaves. After about 3 or 4 minutes it is gone. There is nothing in my stomach. I have no trouble with the foods that I am on and have not been sick from anything I have tried. — Daryl P. (posted on September 29, 2001)

I, too, had this happen around the third week. It lasted two to three weeks and then let up. One piece of advice I got on this site that really worked for me was to have some hot decaf tea first thing in the morning and sip on it. It seemed to calm my stomach down and made me feel better. Now it's a habit! Good luck - Robin

I used to have dry heaves ever so often ... weird thing was it was when I was having a BM. They were very strong heaves too, and after about 5 minutes they would go away. My dr. said he had never encountered that before. I read somewhere where it might be from not drinking enough water. I haven't had them in about 6 months. I am 9 mos. post-op RNY on 10/8.

Hi Daryl: I am 7 wks post op open RNY Distal and had the same problem at about 3 wks post op. It lasted for about 2 weeks then went away. Fortunately I was only having BM's about every other day. At 6 wks post op, upon having a BM, I just burp upon a BM. I still place a garbage can in front of the toilet "just in case". My dr has no idea also....But FYI, they had to go back in at 41/2 wks post op and stretch open the area at the bottom of my pouch where it goes into the intestine. It had narrowed and reddened. Dr put me on prevacid for 1 year and the burping is gradually going away....May not be related but....***NEVER KNOW*****

Yeah . . . When I was pregnant. Obviously NOT your problem! ;)
Seriously, though, the same thing may work for you: Try keeping a couple of crackers and some water by your bed. When you first wake up take a couple of sips of water and a bite or two of cracker. Sometimes your lil tummy doesn't like it when it gets too empty. I tend to get nauseated if I don't eat often enough, but not in the morning, though.
