Question:
Can I get the lap band procedure done if I have a hernia?

I have been researching this issue, and have not yet attended the local seminar (which is in August), and I can not find anything about the Lap Band and having a hernia. I have a hiatal hernia and am concerned whether or not this will prevent me from having this done.    — Tonya L. (posted on July 12, 2005)

I had a umbilical hernia repaired the same time that my lapband was done.by 9months out the hernia reappeared and i have to wait till i reach goal till i get it repaired again.All the Best! Tracey

As far as I can understand the surgeon will often fix a hernia at the same time as your banding I don't know if hiatal hernias are covered the same way but any surgeon should be able to answer if it is possible. The surgeon will more than likely want to see all the info you have and do a pre exam.

Hi Tonya, the surgeon will fix your hernia when he does the lap banding. It should'nt prevent you from having it done. Currently people who have a hiatal hernia and meet criteria for bariatric surgery have lap band surgery to cure the reflux. Hope this helps. Mona
