Question:
Anyone have adm. tightness and swelling pain?
I am 6 days postop of an open RNY and my abd is so tight and feels swollen. Sometimes it is hard from me to take in a deep breath. I am NOT hungry and feel I am forcing the issue. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this discomfort or do I just need patience. Thanks — Gina D. (posted on May 15, 2002)

I am 10 days post op and had the same problem last week, I felt like I was
ready to give birth, and was extremely sore, when I would take a breathe it
just would not let.
I called the Doctor and the 1st think he had me do was get a pillow and
cough hard, and do it again. I brought home that little breathing thing
from the hospital, and My Doctor made me use it 10x's an hour every waking
hour.
Within 3 days all was better.
Do remember to force yourself to take deeps breaths, when we are in pain,
we breath shallow,
As of today I have not felt and hunger pangs, I just make sure I get some
food in, if I have a 1/2 cup of jello and only feel like eating 1/4 of it,
I do, I am eating about 6 to 7 small meals at a time.
Wow this was a long winded reply LOL
Godd Luck

I'm 8 days post-op open RNY, and I feel the same way. I figure this is
normal from having a 10-inch incision! My abdomen is slightly swollen, and
it does hurt to cough, sneeze, breathe deeply, and yawn. But everyday it
gets better. Everyday I'm able to do a little more and feel a little more
normal. I don't really feel hungry either, and for seven more days, I'm
required to eat a clear liquid diet only, which is nasty. I'm just trying
to be patient, knowing that this will pass and in 6 months I'll look back
at this time as an uncomfortable period I had to go through in order to
reach some success! Good luck!

This is normal I think. It is uncomfortable at first but as the other
response said it will get a little better everyday. I also had the open
procedure done 10 months ago and it took me a full 7 weeks to feel up to
going back to work. I started at a a large weight, 543 pounds and in 10
months I am down to 380. No matter what the weight you start at the surgery
is a major one and will take time to feel better. I wasn't hungry it seemed
at all for about 8 weeks so it was weird to not want to eat at all. But
hang in there, I am sure you will be feeling better in no time. Best of
luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am 16 days post op and still have the tightness but everyday is better.
I also am not hungary at all. I can now have solids and I just don't want
to eat. Would much rather just drink water.
