Question:
I am 12 days post op/pain on left side and pain with eating

Two fold question here... I am having constant pain (like a "stitch") in my left side/ribcage area. Anyone else experience this with lap RNY? Also, After about 3 bites of solid food (ie: soft chicken, fish) I begin to hurt in my chest. I chew well and take small bites but it still hurts. I then start to burp and feel the need to bring it up, and sometimes I do. Then, nothing wants to go down. I do fine with protien shakes (half serving at a time) and soft mushy foods like yogurt, cottage cheese and refried beans. Any suggestions?    — Happy I. (posted on May 25, 2003)

Wow, you are eating solid foods already? I had my surgery on 5-14 and I am still on the full liquid stage. I can't fathom eating any type of foods because my pouch still needs time to heal. Stick to the liquids and mushy foods(since you do fine with that) and give your pouch time to heal. Your body is probably telling you it doesn't like the solid foods yet. Good Luck and I hope you stop hurting.

The tight feeling in your chest means that you should be done eating. At least that's what happens to me. And sometimes, when I get that pain in my chest; it's meant that I've overeaten.

Im at 13 days post op......at my 10 day visit, my doc (a WLS specialist here in Hawaii) had me meet with the dietician and part of the day 10-30 diet is soft foods and I was surprised that soft foods includes foods such as: chicken, turkey, ahi (tuna), string cheese as long as they are chewed to baby food consistency, not more than a total of 4 ounces (volume, not weight). I was excited to have lunch of a bit of tuna and mayo,a string of string cheese, and a slice of chicken roll (totalled to one half cup) and BOY O BOY...... I dont thnk Im ready for anything like that. I have been sick to my stomach since..... Im sticking to yougurt, cottage cheese, etc for a few more days. Your milage may very but just be sure to get your protein.

ok - here's what I did and still do sometimes when I get that feeling. One I slow down on how soon the next bite goes into my mouth/down my throat and I also stretch back a bit. I find that eating at a table where you lean foward a bit does this to me...and sitting on the couch where I lean back a little helps the food go down easier. If you're slouching at all, trying straightening up or leaning back a bit. Good luck to you!

I agree with Ruth's post. Whenever I eat, it's better if I keep my posture in check as slouching causes pain when the food goes down. At 12 days, I'm not sure I could've tolerate any kind of meat but soft foods were fine. I was on soft foods at 7 days because I was getting light-headed from not getting enough. Food is a very tricky thing at almost 6 weeks post...very wishy-washy in that some times things are fine, the next they are terribly painful. But I know there is a light at the end of this struggle. Best wishes!
