Question:
Appetite and pregnancy, will it slow down after baby is born?

I am 8 months post op and 3 months pregnant. I have lost 90 pounds and extremely happy with that!! Only thing I am worried about is lately my appetite has been through the roof! I mean I am hungry all the time. And there are times when I can really eat a lot. I know thats part of pregnancy and I am not worried about gaining weight during this pregnancy I know that I need to. But I am worried that after the baby is born my appetite and eating capasity will be the same as it is now. I cant eat large amounts of food at each mean but usually for supper I can eat an entire dinner plate of food. Still a lot less than what I could eat with my other children, but seems like sooo much for having had RNY. If anyone has experienced this please let me know how it went for you!! My surgeon assures me that most women only gain baby wieght and then go back to normal after, but do they eat like I do?? Any info would be wonderful. Thank you soo much, Roxanne — [Deactivated Member] (posted on October 7, 2004)

I don't have an answer to your questions. I just wanted to tell you that I will be praying for you that everything turns out good and you and the baby are healthy. I worry for you because I have always been told that it was not advised to get pregnant until at least 18 months post op. Good luck with the pregnancy and the continued weight loss! Remember though, that it is very important you eat enough nutrients for the baby. Check with your surgeon and obstetritian. Joy

Hi Roxanne, I had a baby post-op, she is almost 5 months old. I did notice that I wanted to eat more often, after the first couple of months. And like you I realy did not freak about gaining weight - I lost all that I gained by the time the baby was 2 weeks old. I think I have settled back into a more normal eating pattern (normal for bypass patients!). I'm eating about six times per day (3 meals and 2-3 snacks). Congratulations on the baby and good luck!
You might want to try our post-op pregnancy board here: http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/amosforums/postop_pregnancy/
or the Yahoo board: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-pregnant/

I am 6 months pregnant and 9 months out from surgery. I am eating a lot more these days, but I am still loosing weight too. The baby is doing fine. I have heard many postops say that they loose the weight shortly after having the baby. Just make sure that you eat right such as fruits, veggies, and make sure you get in all of your protein. You will be fine. I have to admit that I feel much better in this pregnancy that I did in my other two as a pre-op. I do not have high blood pressure and diabetes this time and I am also a lot lighter on my feet. So enjoy and its all good! Good luck and God bless you and your little one. Jaunine

Hello. I have not been pregnant but I recommend that if you are hungry all the time, DO NOT eat as much as you can. At dinner DO NOT clean your dinner plate even though it is less than what you were used to eating before surgery. You do not what to get your stomach used to larger amounts of food. Keep eating small amounts every hour or so.

Roxanne, I got pregnant 2 mths po. I also had a huge appitite and was worried. I was eating every hour. The baby was taking it all and i only gained 5 lbs. which was lost when i had the baby. Stay away from greasy food but don't deprive you and your child from eating belive me as my doctor stated the baby is taking half of what you eat. That really isn't that much . I was on a 2500 calorie Diet a day so try that. Keep your head up and congrats!
